We just got hit with a very chilly day on Saturday. It was nearly 85 F on Friday afternoon, about midnight-3 am a cold front rolled in and it was 40 F by 7 am on Saturday. It stayed cold all day and was overcast. Sun never came out. I noticed some cold damage on about 3 of my plants. It seems to have hit the "Wispy" leaf varieties - Brad's atomic grape a heart I cannot remember at the moment and one more. There was also a bit of damage to the leafs of a hyacinth bean as well.
Overall I would say we were in the mid to low 40's for about 18 +/- hours. The plants that were more established did just fine. Mine are in raised beds. |

The same front went through here too. (I live between Waco and Fort Worth) The high temperature Saturday was 37F at my house. The sun is trying to break through the overcast finally. The potato leaf varieties look worse than the regular leaf varieties. I took a couple of pictures, but they came out blurry. I'll be glad when it's sunny again.

@Ozone, your plants are looking great! Love the marigolds. And the super duper protection armour!! Mine won't be getting that kind of treatment, too many of them. But dang it is good when you can do it.
Salt and TexasTomato, wondering if there was any wind or rain factors that maybe pushed them toward damage? Or do you think, perhaps the genetic effect ie lack of cold tolerance genetically? Overall I still have the feeling, cold days can be worse than a cold night. When you get into 18 hours... or 36 or 48 hours - we always seem to get a three day run of it, at least once every spring... |

@ Bower - we had incredibly strong gusts of wind that I think definitely played a role in beating up the plants before chilling them down. As I said earlier, I think it was the wispy plants that took most of the damage, the PL and RL larger plants did just fine. I think that it was a combination of young plants, VERY strong winds, and the sustained cold day temps (it just never warmed up). It could also have something to do with about a 40 degree temp drop virtually overnight.
We had a bit of cold drizzle, but not a solid rain so I wouldn't think it too much of a factor. |
