Ami-they dont break down-they are sturdy while you are growing your transplants in them. Roots grow through the bottom at least easily. I did take out the bottom of the cowpot when I transplanted my cukes into their containers this weekend.

On the other hand, there is a distinct but faint manure odor in my greenhouse. I have been battling flies that have been doing their best to get into my greenhouse, and not sure I want to do that again.

As far as doing what they are supposed to do, I think they are good.

Taddict, mdvpc, thanks for the update. Michael, when you said they don't break down. Is that to mean while you were growing your seedlings in the pots or after you planted them?
You know what they say about flies, all they do is eat poop and bother people.

They dont break down while growing the seedlings-My plants that were grown in cowpots, then planted in containers are doing well, so I assume that the cowpot broke down after planting.

I hate flies.

Michael I will start potting up to the 4" cowpots this coming week. The smell issue concerns me some but they will be big enough I can put them outside most of the time. Guess it can't be any worse than the fish/ seaweed foliar spray. I will post my opinions later. JD

My cowpots have done great--I never have noticed a smell from them at all, & they have held up fine. I really need to plant in the ground soon--most all have little roots coming out from all sides! By the way, this year is the healthiest my tomato seedlings have ever looked--maybe the cowpots(manure) helped.

My cowpots were (everything is planted outside now in the containers) in my greenhouse, which gets as high as 90 degrees inside during the middle of the day-so maybe thats why they had some odor.
