I try to thin mine down to what I need, can give away, and need for spares early on, as I hate to trash large, perfectly healthy plants. It's much less painful to jettison a 3-4 inch plant.

I guess one could try talking local landscape maintenance
people at apartments, office buildings, parks, etc into taking them. "Pssst: I have a half dozen extra tomato plants that I don't have room for. Do you think you could tuck them in around here somewhere without getting any flack for it? You can have the tomatoes, or put a 'free' sign in front of them when they set fruit, or whatever you want. They like full sun and a little lime."
