I try to thin mine down to what I need, can give away, and need for spares early on, as I hate to trash large, perfectly healthy plants. It's much less painful to jettison a 3-4 inch plant.

I guess one could try talking local landscape maintenance
people at apartments, office buildings, parks, etc into taking
them. "Pssst: I have a half dozen extra tomato plants that
I don't have room for. Do you think you could tuck them
in around here somewhere without getting any flack for
it? You can have the tomatoes, or put a 'free' sign in front
of them when they set fruit, or whatever you want. They
like full sun and a little lime."
