I've got 83 tomato varieties in the garden this year plus some volunteers that I've allowed to survive. With multiples of some varieties it amounts to 100+ plants. The HM 1823 variety had such a sexy name I couldn't resist buying one from the local grocery store. It has produced loads of big tomatoes on a compact plant that are only a little better than grocery store stuff--hard, not much flavor but beautiful. I've used some in fresh salsa with lots of Creole Seasoning salt and it was still good (zingers like Red Boar were also in the mix). I don't think I'll be growing this one again.

Technically speaking, the plural of 'dwarf' is 'dwarfs'.



But if you're talking about the mythical creatures found in J.R.R. Tolkien books, Dungeons & Dragons games, or other fantasy creations, then you'd use 'Dwarves' as the plural.


As far as Tomatoville is concerned, I doubt anyone is going to get their knickers in a knot if someone uses either spelling (at least I hope that is the case).

Here's a couple of shots of heart shaped tomatoes. From left to right-Siberian Pink Honey, WRP (Work Release Paste) and Sister Miriam. The second shot is of WRP sliced. It was delicious, juicy, wonderful but this is only one fruit from two plants. It was planted late so it might have produced more if it had been set out earlier.

I still haven't tried the other two.

Thanks, glad you've enjoyed the book. Obviously variety recommendations are subject to change on a yearly basis. I have a bunch of tomatoes with names written on the shoulders or ugly blossom ends, to taste and I try to sample 3-4 a day. We took our own Bigley (Orange Jazz) slices to Whataburger today and had them "hold the tomatoes". A great burger with a great tasting, home grown tomato is hard to beat. We usually do this through the drive through but we were very sneaky about it this time--not sure if you can bring your own condiments into a burger joint.

These small guys were found growing in a pot of Mexican mint marigold and a Christmas cactus, respectively. Could be the actions of a bird or squirrel. I'm going to attempt to grow them out this season, despite less than ideal climate conditions in my are. Too hot.

My straw bale tomatoes are doing well. Here is a picture of a Cherokee Purple and a Goliath Hybrid in 1 straw bale. Little to no disease on the leaves.

I've tasted a few more tomatoes from the garden-Siberian Pink Honey, noticeably sweet and could use a bit more acidity for my tastes, Sister Miriam was better in my opinion, more complex sweetness and acidity. Mocha Splash has been one of the best tasting so far but the stripes tend to dry out in the skin and make it less appealing.
