It's spring here when the days are slowly but surely getting longer and the nasturtiums start popping up all over my garden and the bulbs of paper whites are awakened by the warming weather. The small bare tree on my way to work has started to bloom with cherry blossom-like flowers and it makes me smile. Yes, spring is definitely here.

I know it's getting close when all the old metal sap buckets start appearing on the maple trees growing along the edge of several roads on my commute.

I take it she knows better now??? I love seeing the old buckets. All the larger operations have switched over to tubing. |

This evening in mid-Indiana the mosquitoes were out in full force! In the 60's next few days. Lets have a hard freeze and snow for the little blood suckers!

I am right in the red hot area (Southeast NC). Our 15 days forecast confirms that: HIGHS in mid to high 70s LOWS in high 40s and mid 50s. I am itching to plant out but will wait til March 1st to see what 15 days forecast will look like then. If the trend continues I will sure jump in and plant out my first batch.

I am sure watching my big tulip poplar closely but haven't seen anything yet so I will wait. Better late than sorry. If we don't have another killing frost this will be the earliest spring since I started gardening over 40 years ago and the mildest winter here.
I picked a few Brussel sprouts today. Bill |

My Azalea starting to flower. Radish and spinach germinating. Onion sets and sweet peas slowly poking. Pines are growing cones but no pollen yet. I like brussel sprouts. I will do fall planting of them when there is a long cool season. I am trying broccoli . They have germinated in cold frame along with mesclun salad mix. Gotta have some salad. No lows under 45F until March 6, as far as the forecast shows.

Drove by an orchard yesterday, 'more than likely peach, no blooms on any trees at all.
NOT a good sign for them, as this means the winter was too warm. Worth |

my peach tree is blooming, but didn't have many freeze hours this year. we will see. didn't think you could grow peaches down in Austin, Tex. My MIL has a monster grapefruit tree down in San Antonio - sucker must be 50 ft tall.

Tulip trees have begun blooming here in the last few days. I see a bit of yellow showing on the buds of my Carolina jasmine.

On the 50 mile trip to the doctor today, we saw all sorts of elm and other trees turning green.
