Worth is the setting problem the only one you have with e runners or is there something I have missed. I have it in my head you want to cover a n arbor or something but the runners wont set pods due to your heat ,before I go on .. am I right so far or is there another reason

Right now my runner beans are blooming and it isn't too hot to set pods by all means.
I have a lack of pollinators this year.
Okay I lied I just went out and looked and I do have runner bean pods growing nice fat well pollinated ones.
I bet the vines are over ten feet long now.
I started and grew them like they do in the UK.
In containers in the warm house and then outside until they got big and transplanted them.

I was going to tell you that there are some varieties now that don't need the pollination by the bees.

They are a few French Bean x Runner beans varieties now , They have all of the runner bean attributes but don't need the bees and have been designed for just that problem

I know or 2 but there may be more since I learned about this a couple or so years ago.

Moonlight which has a white flower and Firestorm which is red

Anyway it seems your are working now, but the info is good for someone else in high heat areas

I started mine too late. They're growing quickly, but I know the heat will get them next month. I'm going to let them continue to grow as long as they stay healthy. But I'm also about to plant Seminole and Greek Sweet Red winter squash on the same fence.

Worth, those flowers look cool.

Worth, are they Insucks Wang Cong, if so a good bean that will take more heat than most and it has bigger beans that the average runner but it is not one of the French/Runner crosses, Great bean though.

I have been undecided as to what to grow this year. I have Gigandes runners waiting to go out in isolation but for my mixed bean fence which I don't save seed from this year I am going with the two above.

Snowstorm with white flowers, Firestorm with red and a new one to me this year which I just realized is also a cross called Tenderstar with pink and white flowers. Should look pretty.

I had good luck wit IWK blooming and looking beautiful from early spring to early summer but they never set any pods in AZ for me.

Something is pollinating mine I have a whole truss of beans on one branch.
Something is causing some of the plants to whilt and die all of a sudden.
I bet it is a snail eating the main vine.

All I am growing these things for is the seeds and flowers I never intended to eat any of them.

I've been meaning to ask how yours are doing? We are getting some really nice looking flowers and a few large beans on Painted Lady and Insuks Wang Kong - not enough to brag about, but wow, such huge bean pods. I think they might have a chance of producing some seeds. Do you let them dry on the vines like Black Eyed... cowpeas? (I'm going to have to get used to calling them cowpeas)

I think of runner beans as ornamental too. adashofpepper chose to eat a Marbles pepper the other day - he quickly found out they are very-very hot. I need to make a special bed with fencing just for ornamentals - Runner beans will be the backdrop.

No... eat them green when they are young and tender, pods and all just like regular green beans, they produce more if you pick them . If you don't pick them they will stop producing and your harvest will be much less. Trust me I grew up on these things!!
