My 2018 Tomatoes and Garden

Started some F2 micro hunting seeds in January. They aren’t so much micro—more like smaller dwarf, but no matter, I’ve got garden ripening tomatoes in Wisconsin in mid May!!!

Mid summer heat has set in early. Mid 80s to low 90s expected through Monday. If I had a camera on the tomatoes yesterday it would have made a good time lapse to see the growth, I swear they grew 2 or 3" and put on full new leaves.

I think that you have the first home grown tomatoes in the whole state. Congratulations!

Nearly all tomatoes are flowering now. Mega bloom on Brandywine Sudduth, Cowlick has one too—debating between letting them go and pinching them.

Plants look good. I pinch my first megablooms. Beefsteak types usually have a lot more flowers than they need, it's no problem discarding future catfaced fruit.

Thanks! I ended up pinching them yesterday. Speaking of yesterday, I screwed up big time. Was cutting lower leaves and suckers off and it was quite windy. Gust of wind hit just as I cut and I cut the whole d$&/ Brandywine Cowlick’s off. I couldn’t believe it. Really was looking forward to growing it next to Suddduths. I’ll leave the stub in hoping something grows but I’ll have to go buy a plant and put it in the same place because I fear nothing will come of it—only a few inches above the ground. Ugh.

I see what many mean about Maglia Rosa. Growing like crazy and flowering like mad, but it does looks sick even though it’s not!

You seem to bet getting similar early warm weather like us...we have had way too much rain
and cloudy days but much higher heat temps than usual. Day and night.

It is shocking, with pics and dates, to compare growth. My dwarfs are at the blooming stage and
hitting the three foot height seemingly overnight.

I wish my MagliaRosa looked that good.

After cutting the Cowlick's Brandywine off, I scoured my local farmer's market (which is probably one of the best in the country), but as expected no Cowlick's Brandywine. I selected German Pink to replace it, a stand had a good sized, very healthy plant. We shall see what it brings, the descriptions sound tasty.

I have some pretty ugly things coming along but they are way smaller than yours and so far, keeping the appendages retracted.
