A glossary of commonly used tomato culture abbreviations

I have to admire your ambitious undertaking.

All that I can add at this point is one that popped into my head early this morning, after hearing my ram tearing a piece of siding off the back of my home:

PITA as in Pain In The Arse.

And it's a good thing that I don't have any neighbors close by, because the string of obscenities I yelled out the window (at him) would have made a sailor blush.

I usually see IANAL as IANAL(BIPOOTV) On WebMD, this would be IANAD...

Black Prince has been included. British Petroleum, beyond petroleum, and others, have not. This is about tomatoes, FGS.

I'm not a big fan of males of the cloven-hoof crowd. They smell, they have attitude, they have no respect for property. Don't treat their women-folk very well either. Obscenities have no effect them FWIW. But you know that.

I have no advice for you on your ram problem, sorry; there is a procedure called ochidectomy you may wish to investigate... It does delimit their breeding potential.

I have encountered a few terms that are not in the glossary yet; perhaps the experts can help by offering a concise definition to add to the list. These are a few:
Catfaced
Stitching
Belly Buttons

CEC: cation exchange capacity - the maximum quantity of total cations
that a soil is capable of holding, at a given pH value, for exchange with
the soil solution. (Definition courtesy Wikipedia)

Catfaced - distorted fruit, usually resulting from incomplete pollination
of a flower.

Stitching - a long blossom end scar on the bottom of the fruit.

Belly Buttons - an inward depression on the blossom end of a ripe
tomato.

(If anyone has better definitions of any of these, feel free to chime in.)

I went back to post #1 in this thread and read through and the intent was to define abbreviations and I still think that's a good idea.

Sure, there's catfacing and stiching and belly buttons, and I could add interveinal chlorosis, concentric and radial cracking and horizontal cracking, and so much more, but I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to just stick with the most COMMON abbreviations.

COMMON b'c I sure can think of many other abbreviations that I've seen here that are used by only a few folks.

Not to take away from all the contributions that so many have suggested but I do wonder if we want to get into non-abbreviated terms, which, quite frankly, could be book length in nature.

As I often say to many, Google is your friend, and it really is for terms that are used, and this list of abbreviations is also valuable.

Want me to start making abbreviations for all the tomato varieties I've grown? Just kidding, really.

Carolyn, thanks for your response, and, with all due respect: I am sort of new to the specific language around tomatoes, and while I am an experienced horticulturist, those three terms threw me when used about a tomato. Cracking and Chlorosis are a bit more widely used.

I think you were right with the idea of keeping the glossary concise, but it's got everything anyone suggested. Maybe some other member with a better editorial eye will revamp it in their own way.
