This stuff is extremely thin, so it won't hold up well to abuse
(like from wind), but it is cheap for the length and very light
weight on the plants. You might want to put a double layer on,
so some air is trapped between for extra insulation:

well, I had enough tarps to do the whole job. as a matter of fact, I had some extras which I put on so it should help. I had a 20 X 10 portable garage frame that I remembered was in the back and used it for almost half of my plants then took my tomato cages and layed them down between the rows that were'nt covered by the big tarp and it gave me just enough height to keep the tarps off the plants. I'm thinking I'll be safe since I just checked on them and they are holding out against the wind. Havent seen this kind of wind since Hurricane Ike. I had coffee cans protecting the plants from the wind during the daytime but took them out with the freeze coming. Hopefully I'll add a picture next week after the freeze showing all plants alive and well!!

If it becomes a total 3 hour chore to protect your tomato plants, you won't do it every time there is a freeze warning and then it will be a frustrating night.

If I had as much space as you (and perhaps the budget of a small country), I would set up hoophouses with temperature-controlled fans and start planting tomatoes February 1st.
Since I retired last year, I've been kicking around different ideas about what I want to do with my plot. Years ago I used to hunt with several guys in Oklahoma and we would make us a tent made out of PVC pipe and clear plastic and we set up a wood stove inside and it worked quite well so I'm thinking of doing that next season. It took 3 of us to set this up in about an hour. I've seen quite a few hot houses along the highway set up just like this with the PVC bent over in a curve. If I did that then I could grow maters in the fall and winter as well.....it certainly would break down easy enough. The question is, do I want to go to that extent. I'm giving away tomatoes as it is throughout the summer. I guess I could go the the farmers market and sell some. I've had as many as 7 rows of 18 plants per row growing in past years. I guess I'm gonna have to get serious sometime in the future.

Looks like I lost 2 plants over the weekend which I think were puny when I planted them anyway. Now I can go ahead and get the rest of my 76 plants in the ground this week. I did hear on the news this morning that we may have freezing weather again around the 15th. I will definately get to work in getting a better cover this time around.

Went to Bloomers today and added to my earlier post listing the tomato varieties they have available, in case anyone is interested and needs plants.

Also, they had Actinovate and Bio-Tone, which can be hard to find.

Planted out today. Nothing under 50 degrees for the next 10 days but you know how that can change. I am impressed with the Jet Star and it looks like an over achiever. It had 2” diameter fruit when I moved it out of the greenhouse. I know 5 other tomato enthusiasts planting this week so I guess it’s kind of like a buffalo heard mentality. Hope we don’t all go off the cliff together I never have felt safe to plant until the pecan trees bud.

Planted ~20 plants before March 1st, 11 survived
Planted 25 plants on Friday, March 6th in community garden during lunch break, So windy
Planted 44 plants on Sunday, March 8th. Still have ~10 varieties that I really want to try. I may have to sacrifice the corn box. Also try to sqeeze time to clean the whole backyard and install soaking hose (don't know how yet), mulch all plants and put the tomato cage......
This is my 2nd year of tomato gardening. I know I am too greedy. May need to quit my job!
