Carolyn, what is the correct leaf type for Kazachka? All my seedlings are RL, and I thought it was supposed to be PL, but my memory could be pulling tricks on me

It's an interesting variety I initially got from Andrey in Belarus and here's why. Put out some plants, some will have cherry tomatoes, some will have mini-beefsteaks, save seeds from the cherries and again plant out and some plants will have cherries and others will have mini-beefs. Do the opposite, as in save seeds from the mini-beefsteaks, and you get both fruit forms on different plants. I asked Andrey about it and he said he got exactly the same results. So when I offered it in a seed offer, I explained the above so folks wouldn't think something was amiss. For me, and many others, the fruits have great taste, be they cherries or cute little mini-beefs. Carolyn

Carolyn, as long as Kazachka has come up . . . I know you said earlier that you were talking to Sandhill about their listings . . . do you know whether their Kazachka purple cherry is the same as the Kazachka you've distributed?

http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Kazachka I don't remember ever sending this variety to Glenn, but if so it would have been several years ago. I have the 2014 Sandhill catalog right here and see that I had circled those two Kazachkas. I guess b'c I had some question about them. I don't talk to Glenn all the time about tomatoes and actually had no input on the 2014 catalog/website at all, just no time to do so from their end. What I grew from Andrey I described above. It wasn't pink, that would mean a clear epidermis. Black or purple? Purples can have a clear epidermis but blacks usually have a yellow epidermis. So what Glenn's description of a purple pink being unique, I can't tell you and nor could Tania at her site where she mentioned it. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful, but I only know the Kazachka that Andrey sent to me which was not pink at all. I suppose one could see it as being a purple color, Tania says black as well, since visual perception is not the same for everyone. I used to offer Kazachka here in my seed offer each year, but haven't lately, but when communicating with Iva she asked if I still had seeds, I said I did, and sent them to her. Carolyn

(Actually they list three Kazachkas. In addition to the pink and purple cherries, under Red-fruited varieties there's "Kazachka Mini Beef: mid, Det, RL, thick foliage, medium sized, salad tomato. ") I did order some of the purple cherry, so if the babies prosper and produce perhaps we'll know more. |

Thank you all for the extra info, I'll have to write it down not to forget again. I'm just happy I have the correct leaf form, that's all. I'll be looking forward to see which fruit form I get though...

if you put out even one plant and it has cherries, those saved seeds will give you both cherries and beefsteaks, on different plants. Carolyn

Carolyn’s Seed Offer
When I received the seed envelope, it was crumpled on the stamp end and the flap was torn. I sowed the following seeds on 3/8/14 8 Dixiewine seeds (2013) with 4 sprouting on March 15/16 Of these, 2 were viable and 2 emerged with severe helmet head 2 more sprouted on March 26/27 but failed to emerge completely Total: 6 of 8 sprouted with 2 viable 7 Orange Veliken (2013) with 3 sprouting from 3/16 to 3/19 Of these, 1 was viable and 2 failed to emerge completely Total: 3 of 7 sprouted with 1 viable 6 Sweet Ozark Orange (2013) with 2 sprouting on 3/15 Both were stem only with no leaves. 2 more sprouted on March 25/26 but failed to fully emerge Total: 4 of 6 sprouted with 0 viable No more have sprouted as of today (4-14). Without the damage, I think I would have gotten at least 80% viable seedlings. Because I was concerned that the seeds had been damaged by the machinery at the Post Office, i sowed 20 new Kentucky Cabin seeds (2013) from Terry at Secret Seed Cartel as a control Same date, same mix and planted side by side. All 20 sprouted between 3/12 and 3/16 with 2 having slight helmet heads I sat the Kentucky Cabin seedlings out to harden off last week. In 42 degree weather, an unexpected cyphoon/hail storm killed every one of them. Ken |

kath's Update
Aunt Sophie: one seedling never lost seed case or got taller than 1/2" tall before it shriveled/rotted; the other is shown below. It's not "blind" but has a "cup" in the center. I've seen this twice before- there's no growth point. Guess I'll keep it warm and watered and hope a sprout appears somewhere, but I don't have any viable seedling for this one now.
http://tomatoville.com/picture.php?a...pictureid=1460 Good news is that a second Sen-Say seedling appeared. It's growing in the shadow of it's much taller sibling but is doing fine. |

I haven't had the time to review what's been posted in this thread to see if folks are having problems with any specific varieties. I see one person saying lousy germinatikon for a variety and then another person with the same variety got good germination. I always expect that. Starting last Friday I've been having mega problems with my DSL line , not mine into the house, but somewhere in the Verizon system and from about 10 PM last night until about I guess 5 PM today I had no access to the internet at all. Fingers crossed all is well, well it isnt there are some other problems that some software has, but I get around it and have already called my computer man about it. I'm still looking for many more reports since there were about 90 folks who participted, and just a few I know will be starting some for a FALL crop, so still lots of reports I'm looking for, Carolyn

It must be very frustrating to have so many problems with your internet access. Here's hoping that more people hold up their end of your seed offer and report their results for you. kath |

Germination results as of 13 days after seeding (planted/germinated):
Istra - 2013 seed - 7/2 germinated - one looks deformed Brazilian Giant - 2013 seed - 6/2 - one helmet head/lollipop Dutka's Pink - 2011 seed - 5/1 Sen-Say - 2013 - 7/5 - one helmet head/lollipop Overall, significantly worse germination than the rest of what I planted. At least I won't have to struggle deciding which ones or how many to plant out. |
