First Ripe Tomatoes In Gardens - Page 4

Dr. Wyche's yellow was the first for me, followed closely by Cherokee Purple, Earl's Faux, and Kellogg's Breakfast. Just picked a massive German Red Strawberry on Friday. The GRS was not quite ripe and though I tried to watch it get perfect on the counter (for about 30 min) I couldn't resist slicing into it. Yes, indeed - let the eating, and maybe even canning - begin!

I am more than ready to start the BLT season!

Had the first BLTs Saturday night. A single slide of Aunt Ginny's Purple more than covered the bread (toasted home-made spelt bread). Scrumptious!

From the "a ways to go" category I've now picked Picardy, Dr. Lyle, Zogola, Yasha Yugoslavian, Zogola, Ramapo, Chapman, GRS, and EF. Haven't tasted all of them yet, though.

Dr. Lyle is new to me this year and the taste is excellent. Wouldn't say the plant is super productive in my garden.

German Red Strawberry is a return and the taste there is excellent as well--would rate it as one of my favorites.

Another return for me is Zogola. More people should grow this one. It is a healthy plant, very productive of large red beefsteaks, and the taste is great. As a matter of fact, from where I'm sitting now I can see several ready-to-pick fruits on the plant.

Hope I get to them before the resident rabbit does.

ouch..ya all make me slightly jealous....

I have 50 plants (40 varieties) that I planted out Memorial Day weekend...Saturday July 21st I was able to find my first RIPE tomato. Kimberly had one ripe one...woo hoo...I guess that is a start..We went from a record 100 degrees 3 weeks ago to 8 days of rain in a row as of today...ah the great Northwest....

Keith...now the race is on, will it be azoychka next to get ripe or one more kimberly...nice drizzly day again today....and yesterday and day before..and repeats himself....we set records on july for hottest days ever early part now we hvae set records for wettest days of july ever..all in the same month of same year....

Sungold, Promyk, Abakansky, Mini Rose, Madara, Pokusa, Kotlas, Imur Prior Beta, Sub-Arctic Plenty, Polyarnie, Nevsky, Siberian, Reif Italian Heart, Taxi, Demidov

I think the next ones might be either Russian Black or Medvezhia Lapa, but I don't know for sure

So far I have picked ripe fruit of: Taxi, PBTD, Summer Cider Apricot, Wes, Goose Creek, 1 Kellogg's Breakfast, Tres Cantos, Paul Robeson and Guersney Island. I didn't care for the GI, or the Tres Cantos. I loved the Goose Creek. Very sweet little tomato.

First mto ripen here was Kimberley which came in about two weeks ago and is producing steadily ever since. After that Siberian Dwarf, Matina, Kumato, Bushy Chavahosky, New Big Dwarf, Alladins Lamp and Mexico Midget. Citroen compact, Lemon Boy, Peremoga, Blaby and Salisaw Cafe all just about ready in the next few days.

I was pleasantly surprised to find tomatoes last weekend after being gone two weeks. Far earlier than I expected. Sungold, Bradley (early salad size from Sandhill) & Legend were the winners. I'm still waiting on my other earlies, Siletz & Wayahead, but mom should be eating Red October today or tomorrow. Go figure. I can't wait to see if there are any more ripe this coming weekend.
Peppers, hot & sweet, are going strong & I should have bush beans & beets this weekend too. Glory days are upon us!

Tomstress...looks like I'm about a week behind you up the coast here. Boxcar Willie, Lime Green Salad and Kellogs breakfast came in today (LGS was over-ripe. Tasty but I could have picked it earlier). Cuostralee, Eva's Purple Ball, St. Pierre, Earl Faux, Druzba and Rutgers will be ripe by the weekend.

One tiny Sara's Galapagos ripened today. From a plant set out two weeks after one which hasn't given ripe fruit yet. Go figure.

Cherries are in except black cherry. Planted in a raised bed with Sungold, Ester Hess Yellow and Orange Santa. Been eating the others for almost two weeks. All the plants are over 8 feet tall. BC doesn't look near ripe.
