My old Chapin brass hose-end sprayer finally gave out (I left it in a storage bin with pool chemicals, and something corroded the dial that you use to select the mixing ratio... whoops).
I hated the spray nozzle on the thing and found it very difficult to get the water to go where I wanted (lots of waste), especially when applying a drench to the soil. Most of the other sprayers, including the ones in this thread, get bad reviews mostly due to poor construction (usually plastic). The Hozon thing is interesting but I can't decide if it would be a pain or not. I'm thinking not. Can I just leave it attached between the hose bib and the hose at all times, and when not in use, leave it there with no side effects? |

As far as leaving it there all the time, I am not so sure that would work unless it has a turn off dial so it doesn't want to suck up from the bucket it's in. Filling a 10 gallon bucket full of water would work for my size garden to just have it sucking up water when I am not using it for fertilizer. I was also thinking that 2 hoses, one 35' long and one 15' long would work real well too. Installing the Hozon between the two, and setting the bucket nearby the area that needs fertilizer. But again, my garden is small and having a 35' hose would work fine for me when I remove the Hozon and the 15' hose. The Hozon can only be used with a max hose length of 50' and I think having a shutoff valve installed behind the hozon to stop the water flow into the 15' hose would make it so I could easily turn the water off when I was moving from one area to the next. Here is the Hozon website http://hozon.com/how-hozon-works/. Update: Hubby just came home and suggested I just get a 15' hose and install the Hozon between it and my 50' hose, then I could remove it and set it up each time I fertilize. Duh, why didn't I think of that? I'd have a shutoff valve connected at the end of the 50' hose before the Hozon. All the shut off control I need to move to the next area and take the bucket with me.

Ordered the Hozon off eBay. I'll get both the fertilizers and the Hozon by Saturday delivery so it looks like Sunday I'll be able to test it out.

Why not just put a small valve in line with the tube going to the bucket of fertilizer to turn the suction off and on.
A needle valve would even allow more adjustment to control how much fertilizer it was putting out. At the end of the feed tube put in a small filter to act as a weight and as a filter. All this thing is, is a small carburetor using the venturi effect sucking water instead of air. Buy using the valve it would be the same thing as choking a carburetor but water instead of air. Opening the faucet valve up more would be the same as the gas peddle on a car thus using more fuel. Very simplified but more or less the same. The more and more I think about this, the more I think that I should just get the Ortho plastic hose end sprayer for $11 off Amazon and plan to replace it every year when it breaks. For my limited needs (two 4x4 raised beds, two EarthTainers), messing with the Hozon just doesn't seem worth the aggravation.

TTF and Vegetable have been shipped out. They are only a few hours from me so I think I will see these within a couple of days. Yay!

Hmm. First-time TTF user here. Can't figure out if I overdid it (or underdid it). I forgot to mix water into the canister of my new hose-end sprayer before applying, as directed by Urban Farms. I set the dial on the sprayer (Chapin professional all-purpose) to 2, and used about 7 oz. of TTF to water/feed 51 tomatoes, 24 peppers, 12 eggplants, and six mounds of squash and cukes. Can anyone help? Will my plants be hungry or crispy tomorrow?

Was the sprayer set to teaspoons or tablespoons? 2 tablespoons = .5 oz. TTF is supposed to be applied at 1 tablespoon per gallon.

Thanks for the replies, MissS and Rockporter. It's my understanding (per the kitchen measurement magnet on my refrigerator) that 7 oz. = 14 tablespoons. I thought that I was applying less than the recommended amount based on the number of plants I have,* but later I got confused when I re-read the TTF directions. Must have been an early-onset senior moment!
*I planned to go easy on the TTF, see how the plants look, and re-feed in 10-14 days, again with a weaker than recommended amount. I amended the beds with mushroom compost and a little Tomato Tone before planting out last month. |
