Gerardo, the pictures of your son enjoying the tomatoes warm my heart. Keep him close and give him hugs while you still can, they grow up much too fast. Tell him an old man in Texas said Merry Christmas and he hopes Santa will be generous.

I just have to be very obvious about it being a gardening project, as the initial phase of the hugelkultur project can easily be misinterpreted, especially around here.
Be careful, I doubt we could come up with bail. |

No worries. I grew up around here, and as you well know, friends and neighbors and schoolmates end up being officials, politicians, etc... Our justice system, while rooted in Napoleonic code, operates under the auspices of the Orenthal James amendment.
I'm gonna treat myself to a new pair of gloves before I go at it. If only I could dig this trench Hollywood style: shot of guy with shovel, first strike into ground, cut to huge pile of dirt with guy standing in waist level hole. |

early eve taste off: Ch. Purple-P.Robeson-D.Italian
Needed a break.
Early eve snack. Left to Right Cherokee Purple, High Mowing, container-drip Dark Italian, Bunny Hop on the tubes. Paul Robeson, Fedco, container-drip (stray rice from Pollo Mongolia) THREE DARC TOMATOES.jpg Same order Cherokee Purple, Dark Italian, Paul Robeson. three darc tenorssmall.jpg Texture: Paul Robeson wins by a nose in a photo finish with Cherokee Purple. Dark Italian behind by a head. A good Robeson specimen can hold its own with many of the best. Taste: Robeson>Dark Italian>Cherokee Purple. All of them are awesome, some are more equal than others. Tormato ashtray factor: Dark Italian > Cherokee Purple > Paul Robeson. All 3 surpass Noire Charbonneuse. Ch. Purple CH PURPLE.jpg D. Your "official taste tester" is so cute. It is wonderful that he enjoys fresh food right from the vine. He would cary it through life.
Thanks for the photos. Scrumptious...

Makes me miss summer. How did Robeson compare in production to Cherokee purple?

Glad you liked them. I definitely enjoyed the process.

I grew Ch Purple to come full circle after a few seasons of not growing it. ISPL is way more productive and on equal footing flavor wise, texture not so much. |

Yeah, it is odd that one of the first blacks I grew was ISPL and nothing seems to be overall better. Beginners luck I suppose, but tbh I kinda wish I would have had to search a bit longer. Thrill of the hunt and all that. Yeah, I'm a weirdo

The tomatoes look great.
Did you buy the jalapenos or grow them? I have bought some monsters at the grocery store lately. I would like to find an OP jalapeno that gets gigantic like that. |

Elgin Pink is a winner, thanks Marsha
A couple of Elgin Pink plants shared a 25 gal rootpot, they required minimal pruning using a CRW cage.
Elgin Pink has a permanent spot. This plant produces big tomatoes. Typical specimen, aprox 10 oz: elgin and fans.jpg elgin sliced.jpg The core of this tomato was just excellent, texture, flavor, juicyness, all on point. A bit of cracking, attributable to growth conditions. I'd like to see Elgin Pink and Dester do a quick 3 rounds, while Terhune waits for the winner. elgin closeup.jpg Official taste tester's first piece had a big chunk of core--the unprompted thumbs up was immediate and enthusiastic. cold rainy2.jpg cold and rainy.jpg Beach garden soil is on the right path. I have to work in the organic matter some more. Clay soils are fun, just like pushing a shopping cart through a Ross or a Marshall's this time of year. beach soil amended.jpg |
