Worked around our 11 tomato plants today...hot and humid. Measured one-inch rainfall from early this morning. Water tank is full again. Mosquitoes are moving in. Prepping the soil and new edges of a 90-sq-ft plot that is fallow for a few more weeks. Good number of blossoms, sparse fruiting. Attached please see photos of Charley's June Bug, Lofthouse's Big Hill and a Sioux.

The plants up at the house that get part shade during the day are setting a lot of fruit. But I'm glad to see that despite the heat there are a few tomatoes forming on the plants down in the garden and under row cover shade:
This is SOTW, fruit and plant. I've never grown this before so I'm excited to see this. Then there's Boxcar Willie, another new-to-me tomato. Of the five varieties down in the full sun only one, 'Thessaloniki', is having leaf curl. |

Battling critters
Thanks, I'm fighting the squirrels this year. They have gotten several, even green ones.

Interesting ... most of mine have leaf curl in spots. Do you think the shade cloth made that big a difference?

They were just lagging along and after I put the shade cloth on, it seems they've grown about 6" taller! Temps are now out of the 100 mark so today I'll take the cloth off.

First trusses are forming nice now, cant wait.
Leaving a single sucker on every plant this year to see what happens. I have always pruned everything in the past because it is a glasshouse. But I think sunshine levels are low here and they may benefit from more photosynthesis power from the extra leaf mass. Something like that 005 (2).jpg 006.jpg 007.jpg |

Here they come
Tomatoes have started to come in here in North Texas! We've eaten a bunch more SunGold than shown as well as some Cherokee purple (not shown) and Pink Berkeley Tie Die. Also representing in this picture are Black and Brown Boar, Big Beef, Eva Purple Ball, San Marzano (one is GIANT for a sauce tomato) and Brandywine Sudduth strain. Still waiting on several other varieties to blush. I pick at blush and ripen on the counter as we have many critters around her who also like tomatoes.
Have to edit I as forgot to identify that big boy. That is a 1.33 pound Caspian Pink. It doesn't look like it will have a huge number of tomatoes, but, wow, the ones it has are huge! Hope that taste as great as they look. Good luck with your crops, may they be plentiful and free of bugs, diseases and hungry critters. Cheers. (Such good fortune could only be in a toast, right?) You might want to start picking those puppies before it rains. they will ripen quite well in the house once they start to have a little color on them and still taste great. No splitting.

I picked it when I saw what had happened. Also, if I leave splitting tomatoes outside they have a tendency to start rotting a lot faster than they do if I bring them into the house.
