Go to a local Hydroponics store. They usually have the ~good stuff~ - promix, extra coarse vermiculite, etc. Are you planning to screen it so you're not putting dust it. For a 15G, I would easily see you adding 4 inches of this, mixed in, just to help aerate the the MG mix.

Better off going to a Feed and Seed store, if there is any in your area. Hydophonics
store are usually way more expensive. At least the one here is.

Ha . I never realized but I have posted that the same product can be a different mix depending on what region of the county you're in. It's somewhat disclosed right on the bag in the last pic

Now just make the volume about 1/3 perlite and you should have a nice potting soil.

It's time to go visit that mom and pop shop I've been writing about over the years. I asked a week ago about perlite there. The mom part said they have huge bags for about $20. The bags look like they're 2 cu. ft. at least. A whole lot bigger than what I have seen at the big box stores.

Look for the bags that say extra coarse/super coarse. It's worth the slight extra cost IMO

I only buy the giant bags and I have seen them at Home Depot.

HD doesn't carry the good extra/super coarse stuff - going to have to go to a nob big box

ALS. Suggestion as well, regardless of bag descriptor. You can sorta feel it through the bag. Just make sure it's not the small stuff.....you can tell whether it's extra chunky or not. Hydroponics stores would be my suggestion.

The bag of miracle gro perlite from HD wasn't too bad. There's some fine stuff mixed in but a lot of it was fairly course. Course enough for it to help out a lot.

I am starting to get the buckets ready today. The tomato plants are well hardened off and ready to go.
That $20 large bag of perlite is beside the $5 bag of perlite - it looks like the large bag gave birth to the little one

My idea of this thread comes from several things. "Growing in Containers"...Mixes you can possibly grow in. I understand that the same brand of mixes are formulated differently by each state in the USA, and everywhere else in this world.

I do take advice from everyone, but I also know we all grow in different conditions with different mediums. A one size fits all would be great, but as usual, one size fits a few.

I am so new to container gardening that it isn't funny, and yet, I want to share what I learn, and help everyone I possibly can. It is a step forward - you have try it before you can knock it or promote it.

Learn all you can, do your best, and share the results is the way I'm looking at it. I'm hoping some of you do the same thing. Do it your way, and post your results here or not - your choice.
