These are the three I would grow if only three were possible.
Cherokee Purple for taste Lillian's Yellow Heirloom/Cherokee Green for taste, I would have to alternate every other year! Striped Roman because it is the one paste tomato that I wish I had more of each year. |

LOL, Quickstrike.....there is a lesson for us to learn here that has been told
by many others. Various climates, soils, etc. can make a big variation in the taste result. I had to laugh in that all three of your choices were among those I felt were unworthy to be included in the 80 varieties I am hauling to Canada. No wonder all these favorite threads have such huge variation. I always feel like they should have tasted MY choices. |

Cherokee Purple
Brandywine, Sudduth incorrect Red Brandywine (the beefsteak; I have never tried the globe) Cherokee Purple is not among the best flavored tomatoes I've tasted, but it's very good and the one tomato I can count on year after year. Not too shabby in the looks department, either.

Sauce - Costoluto Genovese
Drying - Chinese Salsa - Zapotec If I Could Only Grow One Tomato - Russo Sicilian Togeta Man...that is hard (and apparently I can't count because that is 4...) These all made the list after growing them for 10+ years in Wyoming and in Mexico. I only grow reds, I only grow drying/sauce varieties and I could care less about eating any tomato fresh. I also don't care if they are ugly...

I guess that's right...beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I am growing one I named Venetian Marketplace from seeds saved from a tomato at the market in Venice...Big, misshapen, lumps, bumps and no discernible traditional shape...not round, not heart, not pear. It really is not the loveliest of tomatoes! (I am sure the other tomatoes laugh and call it names... ) Come to think of it, most of the tomatoes I grow are not "Beauty Pageant" "cover of Bon Appetit" specimens!

For taste, mine would be:
1-Brandywine Sudduth 2-Sungold 3-Black Cherry However, since I only get a few BS's out of each plant, I don't always have it in the garden since I have limited space. Next group would be (I know you didn't ask): 4-Eva Purple Ball for both taste and production - quite dependable. 5-Cherokee Green - grew it last year for the first time and thought it was amazing 6-Cherokee Purple 7-Black 8-Anna Russian - though I don't grow it anymore, as the last two times I did the plants had fusarium and expired early. I found I had the same experience with all the hearts I've tried. 9-Lemon Boy 10-Tie between Rutgers and Marianna's Peace I reserve the right to change my mind and edit this, LOL. 9- |
