Michael,
Here is what the master spreadsheet will have: Column A: a string with all vendor codes for 2013: i.e. |131={{Ba8}} <br> {{Dam}} <br> {{Jo1}} <br> {{Jun}} <br> {{Ki4}} <br> {{Se16}} <br> {{Vi4}} Column B: Variety name If the page already contains the |131 line, it should be replaced with a new one, from the spreadsheet, with one exception when it had {{tt}} - ''sold out for 2013'' string. In this case, the string should be left there, so the resulting line would be 131={{tt}} - ''sold out for 2013'' <br> {{Ba8}} <br> {{Dam}} <br> {{Jo1}} <br> {{Jun}} <br> {{Ki4}} <br> {{Se16}} <br> {{Vi4}} If a page does not have the line, if should be inserted right after the line with {{{tsa If a page does not have {{tsa }} you should insert the entire template: {{tsa |131={{Ba8}} <br> {{Dam}} <br> {{Jo1}} <br> {{Jun}} <br> {{Ki4}} <br> {{Se16}} <br> {{Vi4}} }} [/FONT] If there is no page for the variety, it should be created. The page should contain as much generic info as possible (i.e. info template, generic categories - i.e. Tomato Variety List) Error handling If update or creation of a page fails, the variety name should be set into error log file (so I can manually correct it)

Tatiana, re the "sold out" condition, it would be better from a programming perspective to add your seed supplies into the spreadsheet including the condition where you are "sold out" of a variety. Then you don't have to look for it to exist in the page, you simply replace with all the info in the sheet.

Dar, it makes total sense, but I cannot do this at this time, as my seed listing is always dynamic. Once it is 'sold out', it is permanently removed.
For the future, I'll have my full (original) list in a spreadsheet too. Right now I only have the list of what I still have for sale, which is ~40 varieties shorter. I think Michael figured out how to insert each vendor code, so this should not be an issue.

I always detested the concept of "team building" in my professional life. It usually resulted in the entire team constrained by a few who couldn't pull their weight.
In Texas, we have a way of using a curse word which normally represents a structure which causes a body of water to form behind it except it has an extra M. When the word is used correctly, it usually means an unbelievable task has been performed before your eyes by an individual or team, or an unbelievable event has occurred. When I use the expletive, it is my way of saying I am totally impressed by everyone who participated in this exercise. DAAAAAYYUUUUMMMMM! Ted Last edited by tedln; January 7, 2013 at 01:29 AM. |

Ted, just wait
Michael developed a tool that he can run to update one vendor listings at a time. I think he had an absolutely brilliant idea with HTTP implementation, and I also think that I will likely come back here begging him to run his tool for any 'struggling' vendors (who 'missed the deadline' with their listings - no offense to anybody, I know some vendors do not update their catalogs until way into January or even early February, and that works for them, but some update theirs in October/November. So I do not want to delay the import for too long, as the benefits for the users will be diminishing) And Michael did it so fast, it is commendable! I think the vendors should now start rewarding him for entering their data.

... And I am one of the 'stragglers' - still working on merging the data and verifying variety names (there are quite a few misspelled by vendors, it happens)
Hoping to post the merged and de-duped data tomorrow.

The tool is working great!
Some minor bugs and not smoothly sometimes. Well, but it successfully updated all pages which belongs to Wild Boar Farms in 2012 and 2013. My tool is awaiting further instructions... - Michael |

Beauty
Some very minor issue: When creating new pages, there should not be a '----' separator before {{tsa}} template - it is already included into the template, resulting in double separator. A blank line is sufficient. [I removed the separator on 2 pages] I manually added 'sold out for 2013' for all Wild Boar Farms varieties that are already sold out. Michael, I will be sending you another spreadsheet shortly.

Michael, one more thing - while you are updating the vendor codes for 2013, can you also update it for 2012? (I see you already did it for Wild Boar )
Terroir listing is coming to your email address. I hope your tool works with redirected pages too - something to watch for.

With all that I have on my plate right now, the last thing I expected to have to do today was defend my website at Tomatoville.
As a friend of mine recently pointed out, if you have to have the disclaimer “no offense” that usually means you knew it would offend and you probably should not say it. I inferred from your statements, and perhaps others did too, that Double Helix Farms is doing something wrong, is burdensome and difficult to use. I know you are well liked on here so I was quite torn as to whether I should ignore this or defend myself since either way I lose. I was hurt and somewhat surprised by your comments and I can’t imagine why I was singled out from over 40 vendors. If you had an issue with my business or me, I think it should have been dealt with in private since any small careless remark can and does cost me and my family income. In tough times like these, I did not really need anyone discouraged, for ANY reason, from visiting my website. http://doublehelixfarms.com/ |
