How many lines are there? I have only heard of Gail, though I haven't seen seeds for it.

My Box Car Willie is marked 12-18Oz, FerryMorse seed. There's apparently a smaller line, 6 to 10 oz that TGS sells. I was hoping for the larger strain, but wondered if it was all the same. Your seed FerryMorse ?

Ricky, I seen you posted about Terhune, the version I have is Regular leaf not PL like most that are floating around, but mine is also listed as RL. They are good too, but that's not totally why I grow it.
Anyway, I have several coming up, as well as Rebel Yell, and all seeds sprouted.

Had already made my mind up to go with your Terhune, plants that make a 5.41 lb tomato don't come along every day. A state record tomato could bring me the wealth and fame I missed in Powerball. And, I've got limited space but I'm definitely doing two of the Rebel Yell.

There are no lines/strains of Box Care Willie that I know of.

That shouldn't really happen at all since all seeds should be the same, but size differences are known depending on all the variables that I and many others here have mentioned that can influence plant growth and fruit size can and do occur.

Anyway, having been the person who first introduced Box Car Willie and having grown it many times, and seen what others got and get, there still are no lines or strains that I know of Box Car Willie.

And in my Heirloom book on page 64 with original seeds from Joe Bratka I said.....in the one pound range, some a bit smaller, growing in clusters of 3-4 fruit.

And as the link said I first SSE listed it in I think 1994 so many got it from me and who knows what happened after that.

I'm sitting here laughing b'c I just checked the listing for it in my current SSE Yearbook and one person said it looks like an an F1 hybrid of Fantastic to me... I could be wrong but it sure looks like it to me

I think I read somewhere that box car has 3-4 foot plants, would that make it a Bush type?

BCW is an indeterminate, however, like many productive indeterminates, once it loads up with fruit, vine size tends to be limited. If it is fed with very high nutrient organics, plants will get much larger.

I've got the same fruit size mentioned on FerryMorse packet: " 12 - 18" oz . But I think fruit size would depend on growing conditions. I would be happy with 10 oz and up size.

Surprised no one mentioned Stump of the World. One of the most productive red Heirlooms for me last year, which was the first year I grew it. Box Car Willie was probably next after SOTW. Then would probably come Sophie's Choice, although for some strange reason that one actually has been better for me in a pot than in my garden. Might be coincidence. Let us know your production winners. Many of us, myself included, have limited garden space and want to maximize the productivity of each tomato plant.
