PNW tomato season - Page 5

Two of my toms have fruit, Supersonic with 3 and HealthKick with 10...but all have lots of flowers and no fruit setting. Seems they stopped setting fruit because of the cold rainy weather over the last few weeks. EarthBox tomatoes are rapidly outgrowing the plants in the 5 gal buckets and smaller planters. Cant wait to see what happens. First time growing in EB's.

I think this season will be another washout (pun intended).
Of the last 21 days 17 have had rain and we have been blessed with a total of 47 hours of sunshine.

While my relatives in sunny southern Ontario are harvesting cukes, beans and are looking forward to an abundance of tomatoes I search in vain for anything that does not resemble an ugly slug.

All you easterners and mid westerners don't ever believe anyone form the PNW when they say we are blessed with great weather!!!! The only exception would be for those who are allergic to sunshine.

I saw last night that I have marble sized maters on Kimberly, Jaunne Flamme and Azoychka. Only 40 other varieties now waiting to set fruit...it's a start. Things look real healthy and hopefully Sunday was the last Hail, Thunder, Lightning, Rain Squall that we see this season...how come it is 80 when I am at work today....????

I think you've answered your own question there keith.

but its good yours are setting maters. Mine are sitting there asking what else can come our way.

I have no fruit set yet. Blossoms, but no fruit. Will check today since it is so nice out.

So no, I have no idea why this is happening, but I am disappointed - the previous generation did so well under lights inside the house...

Cougar Red (an F1 hybrid semi-determinate round
red developed at WSU) is finally living up to its billing
as "early". Three plants have been limping along all
spring, looking not very impressive, and suddenly
the one that gets the most sun set half a dozen fruit
practically overnight. (Still marble-sized, of course.)

Findally getting some more fruit setting. Seems all stopped for weeks now. Maybe the shaking and the old tooth brush trick did it but anyway, there seems to be a lot of little green berries coming now. WhaaaHOoooooo!

I knew that eventually I would get some tomatoes. Khurma is my earliest followed by Moskvich and Black Mavre. I have my trusty Amstaff guarding the precious crop just in case there are any tomato thieves.

He looks like a vicious tomato eating puppy to me...better be carefull. Maybe you already had a whole whack of ripe ones already and he ate them.

Is that a tomato plant in the large black 'tree pot' just behind the hose. I got three of them from the recyclers....just the right size....I think about 18 gals?

Thanks for the advice I did notice a few missing from last years's crop..hmmmm maybe it was him? It could also explain the red stains on his nose.

The pot works great as you can see that the plant in it is the largest. I got it from a local nursery last year for about 4 dollars. It seems that deep narrow pots are better than the larger shallow ones.

Whahooo...

Looks like nice weather is coming from Tues thru to next Tues...in Nanaimo anyway. Hope you guys get it too. Things will really take off. I have 1 on my Stupice also but quite a few of my plants have stalled...Health Kick is not growing at all but it does have 10 biggies...Sugary has about a hundred little babies. Cant wait.

nice weather is coming our way too!

I am sure tomatoes will be happy now.

I checked out my greenhouse plants and I have lots of fruit set there - some fruit is up to 2" in diameter already - nice surprise indeed!

the plants outside are not doing great, but they should take off with the warmer days that are forecasted for this week.

I have lost almost 70% cukes to the cold rainy weather we had in June - this is by far the worst lost I had with cukes. Perhaps it is time to start growing them unde plastic...

So far, I lost only 2 tomato plants to blight - one from Tamara's seeds (Sevryuga) - unfortunately I only had 1 plant, and have only a few seeds left to retry next year; another was one of the Bulgarian #7 plants that grew outside. Bummer.

Interestingly enough, zukes are happy and have a few fruits growing - obviously they were not affected by the cold weather as much as the cukes were.

Lettuces that I planted in March started to bolt, but the ones planted in May are sting going strong. I will not be starting any lettuces until August now, since there is no point doing it in hot weather (assuming we have hot enough July/August)

Melons and watermelons are doing great under cover, blooming but no fruit set yet, despite my efforts to hand-pollinate with small brush.

. Will keep trying, I really want to save seeds from some of the varieties I got from SSE this spring.

Sweet peppers are doing great as well - some have 3" long fruit already, the rest are blooming nicely.

I dug a few potato plants (Norland); harvested a few baby potatoes for todays dinner; can't wait to feast on them 8) . I have to admit that I had larger potatoes last year at the same time, perhaps they didn't like too much rain this June.

Sounds like cukes is my biggest loss this year, so far. Oh well - as long as I get tomatoes and garlic I don't mind losing cucumbers that much
