I think you will like it. I have always had trouble growing it so finally just took it out of my rotation. I had trouble with the large Brandywine too so if you can grow it you should be fine with VS.

Happy 4th to everyone.
Ginny - good to hear from you. How is your mom doing? Those tomatoes sure look good. - We've eaten a few mangos now - they were huge and 10s. I put the skins and pit into the worm inn and the worms cover it within hours. So much for the worms just eaten the rot. Also have eaten a few pineapples too. All the fruit has been a "10". My peppers that I transplanted single hand are all growing well. Lately I've been seeing white flies / eggs under their leaves. |

Barb - my mom is feeling good but she's in a holding pattern until insurance approves the PET scan and mri. We won't know how much the cancer has spread until she has those procedures.
We tried the Virginia Sweets and Cherokee Purple last night. Kansas has had record rains and they were both washed out and watery. But we enjoyed them with cheese and crackers anyways. That was dinner. Today I'm flying to San Diego for a few weeks. I scheduled this work trip right before I knew about the cancer. Hope everyone is doing well. Barb how is the therapy going? |

It is so frustrating that someone with your mother's cancer has to wait for insurance approval. It just seems there should be a fast track for approval for whatever a cancer patient needs. I hope you have a safe trip and that your mother will get her tests soon and have the best possible results.

Today I went back to my doctor about the finger nail fungus. After 2 months of topical treatment with minimal improvement she prescribed oral medication. I was fine with that until I read the instructions that says I have to stay out of the sun. I will be on it for 30 days and then if it is not better 60 days. As hot as it is I am fine with the 30 days but 60 days is not ok. Picture me outside with a headlamp gardening. Maybe the slugs and other night creatures should be in fear!

Hi everyone,
Ginny, I hope the insurance approvals have come through by now. Kay - sorry to hear your hand needs more treatment. What is your next gardening project? --- Update on solarizing: Mix in clear bags/black bags (they are not full so the mix is pretty flattened) - 150 degrees (Temp was taken a couple of different days around 1PM - I think it is even hotter around 4 PM but I don't want to go outside then). Clear bag on EB - on top not pushed in too deep - also about 150 But in the EB with clear bag, if I push the thermometer in fairly deep, I don't even get 100 degrees. -- I was telling a gardener friend about TV today and our FL thread and she is joining. So excited. She told me that she buys Baker's Creek seeds locally too. |

Barb, Here is a cuke my sister sent me a picture of from your seeds.... :-)
My moms insurance approvals came in and the pet scan and mri are scheduled. She will get the results on july 21st then we will go to Moffit Cancer center in Tampa for a second opinion. I'm still in San Diego working and hubby is in Kansas. Its time for me to start my fall tomatoes. Boo hoo. Kay i have fungus on both my thumb nails. It used to be really bad. I buy the box of 100 disposable gloves and put them on any time i do something that will get my hands wet. When i wash my hands i try to keep my thumb tips out of the water flow mostly. This has been the only thing that has worked for me. One thumb is completely healed. The other is 90 percent better. So my thumbs dont look unsightly like they used to. You cant even notice the fungus. But if i quit wearing gloves when I'm gardening or washing dishes it will spread quickly. I am used to the gloves now. I just feel bad about using so many. I am glad your mom can go ahead with her 2nd opinion and treatment.
When Harbor Freight has their disposable gloves on sale I buy at least 5 boxes. I have to use them when I am saving seeds from my hot peppers. I have not been good about wearing them all the time but am reformed now. I do not like this medicine. If I get in sunlight at all I start itching all over. I guess that is a good think or I would be tempted to ignore the warnings. I have saved seeds from the first two Rocoto peppers. Less than 50% were viable. I am anxious to see how my germination rates will be since my purchased seeds had such low germination rates. I had to taste one and it is hot. It looks like quiet a few will be ripe in the next week or so. If anyone want to try growing them I should have seeds to share. They do take forever to germinate. They have to only get morning sun. Plan on growing them for 8-9 months before you get to harvest. I have read that they are much more productive in years 2 and 3. Those purple blooms are worth the effort. |

Glad to hear about the further testing for you mom. Does she feel well now?
Great job on the cuke. I would pick the cuke now; those cukes should be 5 ish inches. If you wait too long on picking cukes, (they will get really large) but the plant thinks it is done producing and won't make more cukes, then the bugs comes, etc. Ginny - for gardening gloves you should look at the ones from gardener's supply. I posted a link earlier in this thread but will post one again. So soon for Fall tomatoes???? When do you think you will be back for good in the fall? I could always start some for you and meet you somewhere. Free Shipping alert - Baker's Creek - (ie rareseeds.com) - Coupon is FALL - expires 7/13 (received in an email from them) I will get the perpectual spinach and a few more packs - need recommendations as I really don't NEED any more seeds. |

If you like Mizuna in salads I highly recommend their Lime Streak and Red Streak. They are so pretty you could use them in flower arrangements.

My mom feels fine except she feels a little tired. As far as seedlings, that is so nice of you to offer to grow a few for me. I started them around July 23 last year (going from memory) which is probably why I had tomatoes sooner than everyone else. But when the RV Park fills up for Winter and with the wind situation, there isn't a really good spot for the containers to get enough sun in December, January and February (the busy season at the park when it is totally full. So I have to try to get the tomatoes to ripen before then. There is a sunny spot where the RV's wouldn't block them but it's close to the water and the wind howls and the plants don't do well there. So I really do have to start early with the seedlings. Once I know what my mom's prognosis is, I will let you know about seedlings. Not sure if I will be in one place long enough to try to grow fall tomatoes. My mom is my heart and soul so some days I really struggle with this. Marsha those Okra are just gorgeous. Were they as good as they look? Kay - 9 months... wow! What do you do with hot peppers like that? I can't ever figure out what to do with them, but they are beautiful. Ginny |
