Yeah, it's been a while since I've been here. Glad to see the web site is thriving and fun.

Here is one called Honor of the Shinto, a Japanese morning glory in the species Ipomoea nil. It's one of my favorites from this year.

I would love to have some Native Ipomoea Morning Glories to grow here at Angel Field. On this Day Our Native Americans of Virginia are being Hornered too. Amen!!!!

Here is a Japanese morning glory I like very much. It has very large pink flowers and nicely variegated leaves. The cultivar name is 'Honor of the Shinto'.

I don't believe I have seen variegated leaves on a Morning Glory before, what a beautiful find! This must be a rare variety as I don't find seeds for sale online. Is there a fascinating story behind this variety? Will saved seeds come true or is it a hybrid?

They are just Beautiful. I want them to grow on Fence and Framing Properties.

Hi Dee,

Yes, usually the major commercial flower seed companies have very few morning glories to offer. I usually trade seeds with other morning glory fanatics to get the different cultivars.

Many of the Japanese cultivars of the species Ipomoea nil have variegated leaves. Blue Silk is another variegated leaf cultivar (also known as Akatsuki no Tsuyu). Blue Silk is the one that got me addicted to growing them.

Of course! I should have known there would be a community of morning glory fanciers, like the tomato nuts! How wonderful to be able to grow those Japanese creations! My favorite has always been the old fashioned big light blue one available everywhere, unfortunately my shorter season is such that if we have an early frost, I barely get to see a few blooms before the vines are killed off. The last few years the frost date has moved forward by almost a month, so I may have to try again.

I grow morning glories indoors in winter. I use grow lights to provide light. Ipomoea nil readily makes flowers when the photoperiod is less than 12 hours. I usually have my lights set for 9 hours or less. Here is a mutant Japanese morning glory that I currently have growing. They could help you forget the winter cold at least a little bit.

Note the mutations of reverse tube in one, and the other has what's called a botan type flower (botan means peony in Japanese).

By the way, I grew up in Superior, Wisconsin, and remember those long winters well.
