If growing your own is legal where you live, I see it as no different than brewing beer or making wine. We're allowed to make up to 100 gallons of wine or beer per year per adult, up to 200 gallons per household.

I grew two tobacco plants one year. They were superb. I got about one million seeds. I dried the leaf in the shed but never used it. The flowers were very pretty, but the plants attracted many aphids which I washed off with a hose. There are many fields of tobacco in my Zone 5 area, near Lake Erie.

Black Sea Samsun Celikhan Balikesir Seed is 2 years old, should be fine. I got it from Sustainable Seeds, they have lots of tobacco varieties. Not sure which variety, but one grows over 6' tall. Be prepared to plant the worlds smallest seed... they are like specks of dust! |

I think I will have to germinate and grow them indoors for a while and then transplant when the time is right. Now I have to learn how to cure/ferment/expand. This will be an experimental season for me.

I started them inside also. It's a pretty ornamental when the flowers bloom also. I need to read up on curing and harvesting at the right time too as the tabacco I dried was harsh.

It needs to dry but a humid process.
This way stuf breaks down into sugars. It is almost a controlled rotting or composting process. Weed is the same method. Worth |

I read a short write up on it . There are 4 ways to cure tobacco. The simplest one is sun drying. It said that it is how is done in Turkey and Greece.. The fancy way is fire/smoke drying to give it more "smokey" aroma. I have a lot to learn yet.

I recall that some Latakia varieties are reputed to be cured in camel dung. Whatever, it works. Love Latakia blends.
Now where can we get a camel?
