So far, this season I've had Black Pear, Black Plum and Black from Tula - plus one nameless black supermarket experiment. All of them have been excellent in taste, but I honestly can't tell much difference. If any, the Black Plum is a bit more 'dry' and the taste comes across more intense that way, a bit smoky and earthy.
Black from Tula and Black Pear are not much different from the Black Krims I ate last summer. Perhaps if I grew them in the same container, side by side, I might be able to tell the nuances apart. For now, I am happy to confess I am a fan for life!

Narniangarden, other than a JBT which I grew a few years ago, and had never grown a black before, I decided to grow several last year. Black from Tula was great, BK so so, and Black Pear and Black Russian were awful, IMO. This year it's Indian Stripe, CP, and JBT. And of course, Black Cherry! Took me a while to get it straight on when they're ripe.

I have tried a lot of black tomatoes and I like them. Margaret Curtain is a standout though. Definitely grow it if you can. Best black tomato I have tried and a nice healthy plant as well.

It's a shame I have to restrict my next year growing list to a very few and select ones. Black Plum, Black Cherry and Black Seaman will probably make it. Sadly, I cannot grow every balck I'd like to, so many other varieties I want to try... But I will always keep a couple of blacks in my garden, God willing.

Today we compared Black Early with Indian Stripe (RL). We had voted Black Early as a notch above Anna Russian and Prudens Purple in our recent taste tests. Today, we thought that Indian Stripe was the winner!

I do have to say that all these varieties are extremely tasty by themselves, and it was only when we compared the different varieties side-by-side that we realized that there was a slight difference in flavor.

I like Purple Bumble Bee so much that I might drop Black Cherry, or at least plant fewer of them.

Karen, I've looked for seeds for Margaret Curtain because you had praised it. The only place for seeds is the Secret Seed Cartel and they're sold out. Anywhere else you know of?

If you can get Carbon Copy, I'd replace Black Cherry with it.

Thanx, I really need to start saving seeds, although I do have seeds to share, just not my own!

In my gardens, black tomatoes are the standouts this year:
Carbon
Ukrainian Purple
Wine Jug
Petaluma Hill Purple (a lot smaller than I expected)

Thanks for the feedback on this everyone! I've got 5 new to me black/purple varieties I'm going to try in 2015 in addition to Black Krim--all acquired through TVille seed swaps! They are Mikado Black, Black from Tula, Margaret Curtain, Carbon Copy, and Big Cheef.

Cherokee Chocolate was the most productive tomato for me. The taste was excellent every time. At the end of the season (November) I picked 12 pounds of green tomatoes and they all ripened. My seeds came from Heritagetomatoseed. I will be planting few next season.

In my garden, I rank almost all black tomatoes as being rank (slang definition).
Back to packing seeds.

Today I am a Necromancer, raising the dead thread because I enjoy reading it so much.
Has anybody grown Margret Curtain and Bear Creek together for a direct comparison?

>I spent years growing every black tomato variety I could find and those I grow now are:
>Dana's Dusky Rose
>Bear Creek
>Amazon Chocolate
>Of those you listed, Black Krim was my favorite but suffered too many years from cracking.
>Cherokee Purple was too inconsistent, you could grow twenty of them in a row and only one or
>two would be producing great tasting tomatoes the remainder of the row...not so much. They
>also have a shorter shelf life.
>Black from Tula was too sweet for my tastes.
>Nyagous just wasn't my type of tomato. I prefer large slicers.
>Indian Stripe was fantastic the first year I grew it, but went down hill for the next 4-5 years till I
>finally eliminated it too.
>If I was to add a fourth to my preferred list it would be Blackmaster, although its not as
>productive as the other three favorites.
>Having grown most of the others suggested...I have to say none were as impressive as my
>favorite blacks, both Jd's special and Vorlon produced some real monsters, they weren't
>consistent or as tasty as I'd like. Grew Carbon and Paul Robeson for a number of years and
>never found one that I'd brag about.
