One tree several long 1 yr shoots to prune off. THe old Beurre Bosc, my fav, is showing a few buds that might grow this year BUT nothing to prune for scions. The top needs to be cut off---if I can talk DH into climbing a ladder to cut this off, scions might be there, and tree would put more energy into the lower half of the tree. ( this is a branch that toook over the leader.)

Great find!!!! Remember scion wood orders are hard to find now. DO plan for next year though!! If desperate, search all sources for one that is still accepting orders, especially if they are further north where the trees break bud much later. |

Another rootstock resource.
On west coast. http://copenhavenfarms.com/apple-rootstock a very good variety of choices in rootsstock. Most, understandably , are sold out. THe high demand for the Geneva stock is because it is specifically devleoped for late blight resistace. And of those, the push for replant disease which is an issue in commercial orchards. |

This utube video came up with a search for "bush pruning apple"
bush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DP5ilmk6z8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDubH9wvEa4 go to last video below for pruning 3rd yr Half size https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQZtBHAzees https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkYXR4uOEjU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrCwL87_fhY I no longer want to be hauling around ladders anymore. Which I need to prune a central leader tree or get a looooong handled pruner, which I dont have at this time. WHen looking for peach pruning, the open branching looked like a reasonable height. Because it is kept to a specific height-- in this case, my reach. Finding evidence of apples pruned this way has been a two day search. The website Orange Pipping lists many rootstock with with how this cultivar should be used (fan, spindle, etc) including "bush". Im still not 100% sure the video above is a bush form in regard to apples, but this video lends credence to an apple pruned in an open vase shape. What are other words to search that mean this open vase type pruning style. Please add. bush vase Last edited by Black Krim; March 7, 2018 at 07:31 PM. |

Brown rot is a calcium deficiency (normally) on apples. we actually had an apple tree we cut down because got nothing from it for several year due to the brown rot.We thought we were missing something on a spray schedule, had another apple start with it and a friend who grows for a farm market he owns solved this for us. last year after adding calcium spray and granular... we finally got jonagolds once again.

The brown rot on the peaches is a tan-pink pale powdery mildew like material that grows all over the fruit.
Is that what you experienced in that apple? Glad you have apples once again! |

it starts as a small tan spot. then it grows to cover at least 1/2 the apple. not fit for fodder or cider. as soon as we started spraying calcium on everything... grapes, apples, peppers etc... it is evident that we are lacking calcium everywhere. last year was the best grape year we have ever had. every bunch of grapes was nice. until the drosophilia fly found them anyway nor did the peppers have mold inside of them

I google this and found just a tiny sentence,, but the link lead to info that didnt mention apples at all. Perhaps, maybe, guessing, that the calcium helped your apples be healthy and fend off that brown rot. Now you have me searching for more confirmation; certainly brown rot is not among the top 4 disease issues...... but when it hits, it feels like it!
