Each double tire has a double fence wire around them for steaks. this makes them 9' tall. On top of fence cages all the rows has Bamboo run across them north south east and west. The bamboo are spaced 14" apart this gives the plant some shade. All of this setup was free accept the field tile it cost 3.00 for each 10' peace. This works well for the tomatoes.

This is from last season. Gregoris Altai and Gary O'Sena in one box. I would plant any tomato in an earthbox with no worries about getting big plants with big fruit, and this is after one year of trying them.

I agree; here's a pic of a cluster of Brandywine Red grown in an earthbox, taken today:

This is my 1st year with the EB to Mantis.I got a couple starting to get some size to them.I planted them in middle of august ,tallest one is around 5ft tall. They seem to be doing better than the ones i got in the ground so far, allthough the ones in the EB get a little bit more sun than ones in ground.Im waiting to see one of them 10 ft ones.

I am sure they can do it Captn. You can always add some hydroponic fert to the water later in the season (as I have done).

Mantis, do you usually put two plants in an EB? I tried it last year, which was my first year for homemade EB's. Couldn't tell if it would have been better for just one. I do know not to put a dwarf with indetrminate. Cherokee Purple really slowed Patio King down. Trying to decide how many per box for 08.

I always put two per box but have to agree with you on the dwarf with an indeterminate as I have a Grumpy dwarf in with Toms Yellow Wonder and Grumpy is doing nothing.

There are some very clever ideas on this thread. Taking bits and pieces from some of your designs I made these up and am using self-watering tubs for the first time. So far so good. I had a bit of trouble with fruit set but that has nothing to do with the tubs themselves and more with hot temperature at the wrong time. The containers are not that big so I put only one plant in each of them. Fruits on all except Earl's Faux.

From the front :

Dwarf Wild Fred
Dwarf Wild Fred
Dwarf Sleazy B
Earl's Faux
Red Brandywine

I can't say that they are doing better or worst than the ones in the ground at this point. I'm having a very good start here this year (besides the first flowers dropping and some hungry catapillars). It's early days time will tell.
