I'm also having problems with Terhune. Of the three started on 3/11, only one came up and made it to the up-potting stage, one never shed it's seed coat, and the third was a no show. I planted the last two seeds I had about two weeks ago and am still waiting to see if they do anything. I'll give these two a good long chance, but at least I have one plant that will (knocking on wood) make it to the garden.
The only others I'm having germination issues with are several from the dwarf project and the Jersey Devils. |

Carolyn, I did the same thing Ginny did and saw that the results sounded weak for Terhune of those who have reported so far. I really urge anyone else who has Terhune and hasn't reported, to PLEASE post on their results. It doesn't seem like very many people have reported.
As I noted, so far I've had nothing sprout out of the four seeds that I received of that variety. Generally, my m.o. is that I will plant 8 seeds of each variety I want to have in the garden, and if I don't get sufficient germination in a 'reasonable' period of time I'll try again. I am pretty good at getting germination and it is rare that I don't get any result at all for a variety. The varieties from plants I grew previously for which I have saved some seed for myself are doing decently; e.g., I have gotten nice sprouts from two-year-old Moravski Div seed that I saved from a prior Dr. Carolyn offer, and also from Green Zebra Cherry, same provenance. I had an amazing experience with Eva Purple Ball last year (TGS seeds) so I saved seeds that are doing well, as well as 2010s I have for Cherokee Purple. I saved seeds from a box of cherry tomatoes I bought at a green market last year in New Paltz from 4 Winds Farm, called Honey Drop Cherry, and I've gotten 100% germination on the 8 I sowed. So far, my only bad experience is with a hot pepper called Black Lite Bulb, 0/8, from a plant I bought at Dutchess County Botanical Gardens. I will try some more. |

I updated my earlier post with my final germination results. Some were very slow, weeks in germinating, while others were nearly 100%, only one was a no show completely. I was really worried about the pink currant but did end up with one plant finally showing up.

Seeds were sowed on March 25th, after 14 days, the results are as follows:
Fish Lake Oxheart – 7 > 5 up (first in 7 days, last in 10 days) 71% Green Doctor's Frosted – 10 > 8 up (lst in 4d, last in 13d) 80% Herman's Special – 10 > 4 up (lst in 6d, last in 11d) 40% Maiden's Gold – 8 > 3 up (lst in 7d, last in 12d) 37% Vince P1 Experimental – 9 > 6 up (1st in 7d, last in 13d) 66% I did find many seed heads clamped onto the Green Dr's, but was able to get them off with few problems. I was not so lucky with Maiden's Gold, only have one healthy seedling of three that came up. One neck rotted under the seed casing, and the leaf embryos were still white and pasty despite having been above ground for a few days. The other one I damaged in trying to get the casing off. Don't know if there's enough material left for it to recover. But all I need is one! Thanks for the seeds!

I'm a bit ashamed to report about the mess I had this year...
I had bought the same bad stuff as starting mix than 2 or 3 years ago, remembered it too late. It was great for the peppers, but a real catastrophe for tomatoes: slow germination, very weak seedlings, many of them died. In this first tray, I had placed (among others) half of Carolyn's seeds, but couldn't rescue a single one. Bought new starting mix, sowed the second half of Carolyn's seeds and everything was doing well, had first signs of germination. Then my little granddaughter (5) came for a short visit and we both, together, sprayed some water to keep the mixture humid and replaced the cover; everything okay. But when I was in the kitchen or wherever, the little girl decided to "help" me even a bit more: She poured a full can of water into the tray, of course without telling me - she wanted it to become a surprise for me... Yes, it really was when I discovered it the next day. To make a long story short: Now I have: 2 Casino Chips and 1 Vince P1 and no seeds left. I'm very sad that there will be no Ambrosia, Maiden's Gold, Zolotoy Zapas in the garden this year! clara |

Hi Carolyn,
Seeds sown on March 21 (I'm late, I know, that's just the way it is this year....sigh) in Miracle Grow seed starter mix, cells, heat mats. Grow lights turned on only when germination started. Blush: 3/3 (100%) Fish Lake Oxheart: 3/3 (100%) Lucinda: 3/3 (100%) Podorok Fei: 1/3 (33%) Russian Queen: 3/3 (100%) I am very pleased with these results! All seedlings are vigorous and healthy, although Podorok Fei is a little weaker at this point. Thanks much for this offer - I am excited to taste these tomatoes! -JoAnne |

Morning Carolyn!
Seeded 4 Indian Stripe Potato Leaf on March 30th. 2 sprouted on day 5 (April 4th) 1 sprouted on day 6 (April 5th) with serious case of "helmut head" As of day 10 (today) the last seed is still being shy, but sprout 3 has finally split out of his helmet(with the help of lot's of spit <grin>)! So we stand at 75% (3 of 4) germination on day 10. I will be trialing these right next to regular leaf Indian Stripes from 3 different sources so I can compare traits. And again, Thank you kindly for the seeds(and for all that you so generously do for the tomato world) and will keep you updated on results. TimothyT PS Are the 2011 Indian Stripe Potato Leaf seeds you sent directly from B54Red in Alabama or from your own growout? |

I'm still having some health problems, so post when I can. Timothy, B54 did not produce the seeds that I distributed. He sent me some seeds last Spring, and as usual I sent seeds to Craig who raises my plants for me and the same seeds to one of the guys who helps with seed production. The seeds I sent out for the seed offer were from one of those coveted helpers. The plant that Craig sent me was PL, as were the plants that the seed producer grew. I no longer can produce seed here at home, with very few exceptions, and recently just the experimental pink currant seeds distributed to just four folks that were in the experimental section. And that b'c the actual fruits were sent to me all smushed up as I had asked for b'c the person had never fermented seeds before and I thought it would work best to do that, so I had to ferment them ASAP, and did.

10, 10/10 germinated 33, 23/25 " 37, 3/3 germinated 47, 50% 66, 66% 87, 8/8 germinated 98, 66% So it lookes like the Vince P1 seeds are doing just fine. For Red Ambrosia: 85, 0/6 87, 4/8 Seeds for both Vince P1 and Ambrosia Red were seeds produced in 2011 and as long has I see that at least 1-2 folks are getting the seeds up, I don't refer to them as problem seeds. Once again showing the huge range for a paricular variety, as I've spoken to before here in this thread.
