Hi, Carolyn

I sent the Brandywine/NAR F4 seeds to Jeff (he had asked for Brandnar in the
wanted section). I had been given F3 &F4 seeds by Bigdaddyj who got them from Bill Jeffers a few years ago. J (who lives 5 minutes away in DE) grew them once or twice, then lost interest in them because of disease issues. I grew out several of those F3 seeds. I'm growing my F4, both potato leaf and regular leaf, again this year as well as Dixiewine which originally came from Tom/NJ and had been known as NARX. Last year, all of the rl and pl plants
produced large, well-shaped red fruits that I thought had pretty good taste.
I didn't really see any difference in the fruits from these 9 plants and saved
seeds from 4 of the plants. It'll be interesting to see if they're identical to
the fruits from the 2 Dixiewine plants I'm growing.

My B/NAR plants are doing very well (I tend to have very few disease issues); a few well-formed early fruits; a few mal-formed fruits that may have formed during a period of cool nights. It's still early but I think that my plants, in general, don't seem as productive as last year. A couple of exceptions are the Indian Stripe/possibly Daniels that I got from you-plants seem to have produced an abundant quantity of early fruits. The lower, earliest are well-shaped; the later fruits seem to have several mal-formed among them.
Hearts-- Fish Lake Oxheart, Hays tomato, Granny's Heart seem more productive than my beefsteak varieties at this point. I'm hoping they're
just a bit late late!

Darlene side note-I'm using Daconil this year (didn't last year) because of
frequent rains/late blight concerns (reported in Lancaster, Pa)

I'll keep you posted on how the B/NAR do this year for me. My Brandywine
from Croatia is a very healthy plant with a few nice fruits on it. I get the impression it's a later producing variety and if I'm not mistaken, I think Ray
may have indicated that. Overall, it's been a bit of a strange year for weather
here; extremely hot followed by moderate temps, some very cool nights.
Today (and yesterday!) is close to 100 degrees while plants are heavy in bloom. My Earl's Faux plant, for instance, has 2 good-sized tomatoes at the
bottom so far and normally, I think it would be loaded by now.

Darlene, Tom was just one person in the sequence of folks through whose hands passed that cross and there were many more. Bill J traced all in squence at another message site quite a while ago.

Since I was the one who introduced NAR I kept telling Bill that I owned half the cross if you will, ahem, and he did send me seeds and right now I can't remember if they were the F1 or F2 seeds.

He knows that these days I can't grow out lots of plants from a cross to make selections, but I did have one plant and so help me, without trying to find my data book for that season I can't even tell you what it looked like or what the taste was like.

It's been so long since I've been here I forgot where/how to log on! Hey Carolyn, Viva La France Open! My Girl Maria now a Grand Slammer and must be considered as one of ten best ever. Came back to #1 from #126. I never gave up. Neither did she! OK, I am considering sending my Brandywine plant back to Croatia. Disease magnet and skimpy fruit formation. I see two tiny fruit and 100 wilted flowers. Darlene thank yo for all those beautiful plants you grew for me. I'm sorry I messed this Croatian fellah up LOL. Rest are doing fine. First ripes now arriving from a couple varieties I started extra early...

Yes, I watched all of the French Open and expect to watch as much as I can of Wimbeldon, where I predict that Maria will win the singles, possibly Serena as a 2nd pick, and Nadal to do same with the men's singles, with possibly Djokovic and Federer as possibilities.

About sending your Croatian Brandywine plant back to Croatia.

When Ray first started talking about it there was a very long thread and perhaps I stand alone in not believing that it's anything other than the Brandywine we already know. As in seeds for Brandywine sent to Croatia, just as with my seed offer I send varieties to many places overseas, then grown in Croatia, then seeds back to the US to someone who said it was from Croatia, which of course would be true, and the cycle is complete.

Just sayin' that Brandywine anything didn't originate in Croatia IMO.

Bigdaddyj. I'm hoping your Brandywine from Croatia is just in the wrong place at the wrong time! So far, mine (we both have rl) is dark green although I'm
getting some mottled yellow leaves on the bottom of a few other varieties.
We're having a third day of very high temperatures so I'm not hopeful about
the current blooms on mine, too.

Looking at the B/C plant this morning, I have a few quite large fruits at the bottom and more in the middle than I had thought yesterday so overall, I'm
very pleased with it. Considering it's popularity in CA with the Master Gardeners Group, I really appreciate Ray getting plants and sending out seeds. There's nothing worse than coveting a variety sold on the other side
of the country and not being able to purchase seeds!!

Carolyn, I've seen some old posts on T'Ville and GW about the B/NAR cross
and some beautiful photos posted during that time. I think Bill had also
mentioned a pink version and of course, some of us have seen photos of Ami's
beautiful Brannar. I've also grown NAR and liked it very much-it's interesting
to grow them all and look for any expression of different traits. I'll have to
grow NAR again next year for comparison. Darlene

Raybo, This one weighs in at 1.74 pounds. I decided to pull it early and let it ripen in the house.
I placed it next to a 12" softball for comparison.

Timbotide,

Looks great. Mine last year resemble that one in your photo. My experience was that the taste improved as the Season progressed, and I'll be interested to hear your taste test. Looks like a gigantic BLT is in the making!!

Timbotide,

Very nice looking tomato. I have a couple of green Croatian Brandywines in the garden that look almost identical to yours. I can't wait for them to ripen so I can taste them. I'm looking forward to your taste evaluation of it.

Has anyone else noticed that BFC baby fruits are fuzzy, or is it just me?

Default Croatia

Raybo was kind enough to send me some Brandywine from Crotia seeds. All seeds sent to me germinated. Since I have so many varieties growing and a total of 50 plants I took what I thought were the best of the seedlings and selected 2 of them. I planted them in my main garden. One turned out a regular leaf and one was a potato leaf. Both plants are very healthy and doing well. Curious to see if there will be a noticeable difference in taste and appearence. Thanks again Ray !!!!!

heirking,

Glad to hear you got both PL and RL plants to evaluate. Please post some photos and your taste impressions when you start getting ripe fruit.

Ray, I feel very badly that I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I ended up
getting a large number of medium to large fruits from my regular leaf plant.
We did taste test it against some of our old favorites (Sandul Moldovan comes to mind) and generally B from C came out on top. It's a nice addition to my
"keeper" tomato list. Thank you very much for your seed offer! Darlene
