I didn't realize the different species of peppers would cross.

C. annuum sorts readily hybridize with each other. It's also possible to cross annuum sorts with chinense or frutescens.I selected compatible chillis to experiment rather readily.

The reason I asked is because the Tabasos I've grown are C frutescens and, while I've heard of interspecies crosses, I wasn't sure how easy it was.

This pepper crosspollination chart has been very handy over the years.

Capsicum chinense 'Uvilla Grande' pods started maturing, didn't taste them yet.

Today I tasted one of Pimenta da Neyde pods.It had a typical 'chinense' smell that reminded me Datil pods.Sure it's a super hot chilli but not a nuclear one!Say around 200 000 SHU.Considering pod taste PND is an ordinary chinense, striking as a plant though!

Crandrew thanks for passing by.I'm pleased that followers enjoy my photos. However I'm no photographer in technical sense just trying to mirror plants from my point of view.

It snowed for 3 days in Istanbul.Fortunately I had cloched Royal Black in ground just before it started to snow.As seen in photo some minor frost damage on foliage happened, however leaves still look alive.

Nice Levent Good idea with the water bottle. Any thought in building a small row cover or greenhouse to keep them in through the winter?

My potted plants (Chillis and some Solanums) are in my garage turned greenhouse. All the tomatoes and chillis in ground frosted except Royal Black. This is a temporary setup to keep it alive. You know I need it as a genetic donor....In Istanbul temperatures never drop down -7C thus I expect it will not freeze under cloche.

Chilli season has started officially!I have recently started sowing chinense and baccatum sorts at first.2-3 weeks later I'll sow frutescens and annuums.
No need to say I planted seeds in straight diatomite in a propogator to keep the humidity. Each cub has only one seed thus I may grow them in those cups until they get a good size to transplant to ground or subirrigation pots. |
