Lol, Idk I would have seized that opportunity to lay to rest any questions of authenticity. One thing I'm curious about is the sugar water soak. Sucrose has been proven to reduce germination in every study I've read.

I have extremely limited knowledge of how to start old seeds as I am a new seed starter. Hope we can get some more thoughts on how the pros on here would have handled those seeds. |

Fascinating "who done it mystery" thread to follow. The resourcefulness of the T'ville community is always amazing (SJames, et. al.).
I started public speaking in 1986. It seems that it's part of human nature to stretch the facts. (ie: "The story grows with the telling," fish tales, etc.) My wife was usually present when I spoke and would light into me afterward when my stories varied. It was great training. I'm not sure "who done it" in this case - seller, webguy, or a little bit of both - but one thing is for sure - it's a lot harder to get away with things in the internet age especially with a passionate group of people to check out the story! Kudos to Worth on his issue spotting. |

I can still see my comments but cant see Johns questions.
I did give the guy an option and didn't accuse him out right of BS. His reaction was good enough for me and I don't really care if the way I came across was rude or seemed rude. Where I come from it is called calling someone out. Something millenniums cant handle The guy bought the article and made up a story at the least or was told a story. The ad never said the frame was old. The seeds weren't (sealed) from the air. The way he took the back of the frame off was enough for me to know he was either an idiot or knew it was a new frame and didn't care. Really who uses a Phillips head screwdriver the take off the back of a frame. The glue would not have been stuck like that it would have been brittle. The paper would have just fallen apart. My consensus is the people that sold it to him and he were both full of BS. Then you have to look at the seed germination as well. It is a video and can be edited it isn't like you are there every step of the way. Later on he can take just about any tomato plant he wants and say this is the tomato from the old seeds. I have seeds for sale from this plant and people will flock to him like fools buying these seeds from this so called extinct tomato. Or he unwillingly will think they were from this tomato but in reality the people that sold the shadow box put modern seeds in it. Again hoax on both ends. Doesn't anyone remember the Piltdown man/hoax. Worth |

Worth,
I see my comments at the top so apparently your own comments show more prominently than others. Since I called your tone rude I will further explain. To me, and opinions will differ, calling out that way is fine with a person you know who understands your typical nature. Doing that to a stranger is rarely going to produce a productive conversation or answer. If you had talked to me that way and I wasn't a scam artist and was a stranger to you, I would have been significantly more "forthcoming" concerning my feelings on your tone than he was. Everybody has their own way and they are all valid as it relates to that individual. Edited to add that this in no way excuses the inaccuracies in his story or the unverified, at this point, claim on the seed age. He should answer the tough questions as well as the praise for sure. No idea how truthful or untruthful the seller of the seed display was, but I doubt they made any alterations to the seeds in the packets.
Looking at how nicely displayed the seed packs were, I don't think the target market was a garden geek who was going to bust it open and try to grow out all the seeds... |

I'm old enough to remember some science teachers teaching that "Phylogeny recapitulates ontogeny." How's that for a mouthful?! |

This person means nothing to me at all you have to understand that.
He is just a YouTube person. I was looking for a reaction not an answer. It is what a good interrogator does to get the truth from a criminal. They dont asked if someone did it they asked how they felt after they did it. Be their friend commiserate with them. It gives the impression that you already know they did it. Having piles of worthless paperwork stacked up with their name on it helps. People standing around in white lab coats writing stuff down. Pictures of the victim on the wall. Crime scene photos. We're are not saying you did do it but if you did. The person thinks you have all sorts of evidence on them already. I wish I could have asked him in person to see his body language. Hellmans is the first person to bring this fake up. I didn't even look at the thread for awhile and was surprised to see all of this. |
