I picked up a Ben Gantz fruit from Lee at Tomatopalooza. The seeds have fermented and are ready for cleaning and drying. It will go on my must trial list for next season.

hill60, very nice
do you have a pic of the plant? Your fruit look larger and smoother than what my plants produced ...... although I was more than happy with flavour this end ..... and if you had a pic of the sliced fruit that would be a bonus

I'll have to let some more ripen we ate the ones you see in the picture. Most of the tomatoes look like they will be in 6-8 oz range. The larger one you see is the only one at this point that is that size. The next pictures I take I'll make sure I show one sliced.

Ben Gantz
Ben Gantz are starting to come in now. My plant was a little delayed as it took a hit from a downed tree limb in a spring storm. Thus, it is a couple of weeks behind Stupice. BG flavor is very mild. Somewhat sweet. Works well as a slicer on sandwich. Size is larger than Stupice. I would describe it as a small beefsteak. Thanks for including me in the trial.

Thank you all for your efforts and your growout info. I hope you liked the variety.
PNW_D, generally, this should be a smooth fruit. As with many varieties, there can be a few catfaced, nasty looking toms - especially if they are the earliest fruits off the plant. It is possible that the variety is not 100% stabilized. I grew 6 plants this year and they were all identical. Still, a small percentage of the seed may be unstable. How many plants did you grow? D., as we are in the same climate, I thought I'd share my pictures of Ben Gantz, which also was quite irregularly shaped. I attribute it to the early fruit set in our cool night spring weather, as I often observe misshapen early fruit in my main garden here in PNW.
Average fruit size was 6-8 oz, with some fruits reaching 13 oz. I love the flavor. I grew 5 plants, and did not see any variation, other than one plant produced ripe fruit about 2 weeks later than others. So here you go (July 25, 2009):

Ben Gantz
Some ripe pictures of the Ben Gantz. The plant was very early putting on fruit, second to Melfort, which I grew for the 1st time also. It took awhile for the fruit to reach the ripe stage tho. Aurora, Melfort, Dokhodny, Betalux and the cross Galina x Grub's all beat it out. I like the taste.

Paul,
Do you want any Ben Gantz seed returned to you at the end of the season? I must say I was reviewing my post above and I originally thought the taste was a little bland, but it seems to have improved over the course of the season. The production is very high and it keeps kicking out the tomatoes without interuption. Probably the most productive plant in my garden (other than black cherry). Pat |

Sorry, but I thought I would post one final observation. I saved seed from BG and noticed that the seeds vary in size from small to larger. Can anything be read into that?
