The local 11am news on NBC is saying the eye should make landfall at Rockport.

Hi everybody. We evacuated yesterday around 5:30 pm and arrived to our friends house in De Valle around 10:30 pm. The weather channel keeps saying we will get rain here but the major flooding will happen below us. Thankfully my friends evacuated around the same time as we did.

Sadly, I don't think we will have a home when all is said and done but we did what we were responsible to take care of and can only have a smidgen of hope it will all work out. Mandatory evacuations all around us, and when they do it our town basically follows suit.

I hope everyone in coastal Texas takes it seriously. The news up here says if the storm stalls out, there could be places with 35" of rain along with a 10 foot storm surge.

Rockporter, I am sorry for the unknown and fears you are having right now but so glad you are safe out of the worse of it. I hope your insurance will cover your losses, even though it hurts to lose you beloved things, but the most important part is you and yours are safe.

You'd be surprised how pleasant rain is on a long hot ride. Many times I've started a ride when it's raining - not an opinion shared by a majority of my recreational compatriots.

Bad effects:
Wind gusts can make the bike feel unstable
Low visibility with wet glasses
Wet makes your brakes work not very well
Wet makes the grip of your tires less
Wet roads pick up sandy dirt and gets it in your mech (and up your back)
Standing puddles can hide potholes

I expect the Hotter'n Hell will go off as normal.

It's started as of today. I was just meaning that the perversity of Texas weather at this time of year is something else. I guess it is a case of if Mother Nature can't sweat them to pieces, she can soak the riders in another way.

The race has always gone on so far in spite of things.

Rattlesnake in road? check.

Stopped bike and fellow steps into a fire ant bed? check.

Scorpion stings? check.

Jack rabbit runs along and then into group of bikers causing confusion for the riders? check.

Roadway hot enough to almost sear closed any road rash from falling down? check.

Live stock loose? check.

I just looked at the time lapse of Harvey on wunderground.com. It's just sitting there, on top of Rockport. Not moving at all. I wonder what the rain totals are up to?

Also, note that there's a LOT of peripheral activity in far-E TX and LA.

Heavy cloud cover clear up here. Lot of water hitting the ground now, it's going to take time to know what the damages will be.

The weather is acting like the Karate Kid, "rain on - rain off". The cats are running outside to run back inside 10 minutes later. I just gave up and left the door open.

My wife was watching the local FOX station this morning before I woke up. She said the weather person said, "Today is the last day of summer here." hmm

This is the 8th straight day of highs in the 80s here (That is not normal at all.) So I watched local ABC, National Weather Service, and Accuweather and they are basically agreeing with what FOX said. A cold front is on its way featuring highs around 80 and lows in the lower 60s.

Normally, it's hot here until mid October. (90-100+) Our son is telling me the bees are already getting ready for cold weather...this is the last day of August not November. This is a picture of a Japanese Pink Cherry plant I planted in July for the fall garden. Normally, this is what I hope they look like by the end of September.

What an odd year of weather. I guess I need to go wrap the pipes next?

We're getting a bit of a wetting today from "possible #10" which did not turn into a named tropical storm, and is passing south of us anyway, so no more than a breeze and a shower here. Also it's moving quite fast, so none of that squatting and dumping on the same place for days either! All over by tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile the Atlantic hurricane season is really peaking, with another huge hurricane Irma already spinning.

nighttime temps in the low 50's and supposed to dip into the 40's tonight.
I turned the heater cable on under my cement block plants on a timer for tonight and beyond.
