Default What to plant now

I had 2 grape and 4 bush better boys planted in global buckets. The grape did very well and the others just so-so. They are located on a concrete patio and very close to the house which is painted white. The 100+ degree temps we've had wiped them out. Deos anyone have a suggestion as to what to plant in those buckets for fall/winter?

I planted cole crops, beets, carrots, turnips, rutabagas, lettuce, spinach, and Swiss chard in the fall and they all made it through several hard freezes. Here (just north of Dallas) I didn't set any of them out until October but I imagine in NC you could probably start a little earlier, but probably not quite yet. The cole crops HATE hot weather and the lettuce and spinach bolt and taste bitter.
