Foreign Varieties-Evaluation and Breeding

As a potato breeder, I am always augmenting my parent blocks for breeding purposes. I grow old or newly introduced varieties for one to three years of increase, then I usually toss them out due to suspected viral contamination.. The new seedling hybrids produced from such a list take priority in grow outs and further crossing.

The foreign varieties came to me in a box weighing about 10 lbs for the nearly 100 clones. Each variety has two tubers no bigger than 1" (plus or minus), yet I cut them into maybe 8 hills. Some of those varieties will produce 40 lbs or more in those eight hills. When I get done digging, I will have over a ton of tubers, easily. I also have picked over one hundred pounds of hybrid and OP potato berries from this group alone.

Some of the varieties listed below are new to me. Others, I have grown off and on over the last 50 years.
I am constantly looking for unique flavors and agronomic characteristics which will help in my breeding work.

I find it very difficult to sample all of these varieties and others in cooking tests. I will often eat upwards of 5 lbs. of potato samples in a day's time. I prefer boiling to all other cooking methods, but I have been doing a lot of french frying lately; sample after sample. This info is put down on paper to add to the True Potato Seed (TPS) packets.

I could probably write a huge book on potato varieties, which is one of the reasons I agreed to be a moderator of the potato forum. I am just too lazy to write a book.

Potatoes are also a big crop in my birth country Finland. Most of the potatoes sold there are grow domestically, so the country may not be listed as a big producer. I was surprised to notice that there was no varieties listed to be from there. But when I started to read the names, I found that many of the Swedish varieties had Finnish names. Swedish language is totally different from Finnish, so I am sure that these names are Finnish. The origin of these varieties may be Finland, but they have got into distribution via Sweden.

Svalli,

I did know that those were Finnish varieties, but the country providing the germplasm is how the import certificate works.

Thanks for those local names, it sure makes it nice to research more than one name for a variety.

I have progeny from all those you have listed, and the offspring and their progeny sure show the diversity of the clones that must have pre-dated the originals.
