Seed saving criteria
How do you decide on what tomato to save seed from?
Sometimes I go with the 1st one to get ripe. Other times it's the biggest specimen. |

All seeds produced by a single plant will be the same genetically except in rare circumstances such as a sport.
That being the case you can save seeds from any tomato in the plant. For myself, I choose early fruit due to the bees not being active in my garden when early fruit are set reducing the chance of an accidental cross. It’s a good idea to save seed from more than one fruit just in case though KarenO Be sure your plant and fruit matches the attributes of the variety by researching and save seed from your best healthy plants only. Some serious diseases can be carried on and in tomato seed. Ferment and dry well before storing. KarenO |

A catch 22 on my indigo blue beauty.
They have to be exposed to the full sun to turn blue, but are getting sun scald. Those will have to be seed donors. |

If that were true tomatoes would be the size of peas.
I"m pretty sure the pioneers saved the seeds from the biggest. |

Speckled roman will have plum type tomatoes and on rare occasions a round one.
Over the years I saved the round ones seeds and got it up to about 25% round. I lost the seeds in a freezing accident, ending that experiment. So all seeds aren't created equal. |

Except in the case of a sport or somatic mutation all of the seeds from plant are genetically identical. You need to save seeds from the best Plant. Not Necessarily the best fruit
It’s a true story , really. KarenO |
