Default Keeping cukes

Cukes seem to go flaccid almost overnight in the fridge.
If you store them in the fridge in water, they seem to hold crisp as new for over a week just fine.
Probably saw the tip here on t-ville, but it works great.

I let mine sit on the table and right before I use them I put them in ice water.
A cucumber wont last long in my house it gets pickled or ate in a day.
Almost any thing in water in the fridge will stay fresh longer.

I wrap my cucumbers in plastic wrap as soon as I pick them (don't wash until using) and refrigerate them. The ones I grow -Armenian, Gen. Lee, Summer Dance & Long green Improved have delicate skins which dry out fast, and I ususlly pick them young and don't peel them. I am having a bumper crop this year- begging people to take some !

I used to grow both slicing and pickling varieties and noticed the slicers would soften up before the picklers. Now I only grow pickling varieties. They're crunchier to begin with and remain crunchier in the fridge. I keep mine in the produce drawer.

I agree, Shelleybean- most slicers are very watery and are missing the "crunch" I love Gen. Lee for that bite- very crunchy and solid. Armenians are also very crunchy (with NO burp since it is technically a squash)

I didn't know about keeping them in water. I will have to try that.

I wrap them in a paper towel and put them in a plastic bag in the fridge. I change the paper towel every 2-3 days.

I pick them before it gets hot in the day; and also higher up on the stem (so there is more stem). Then immediately get them in a ziplock bag into the refrigerator.

For me, they last much longer this way.
