Default Corn salad?

I was going through some seed catalogs I normally don't order from, and happened to see an entry for Corn Salad/Fetticus. I have never heard of this green before, but after doing some searching, it sounds like a good lettuce substitute.

Has anyone grown it, and would you/or not recommend it?

Corn salad is also known as mache or valeriana. Its great-slow to germinate somewhat, is much slower to mature than a cutting lettuce but wonderful nutty flavor. I grow it in containers in the winter in my greenhouse or outside in the fall or spring. I live in the desert southwest.

Mache is a fabulous green, i don't grow it, as I can get good fresh stuff around here. It does make a great salad with mache, dijon mustard vinaigrette and simple garlic croutons.

Absolutely fabulous, especially when grown under cover during the supposedly non-growing season. Eliot Coleman's to 'blame' for popularizing it here in NA. Much said about it (how-tos etc) in his books.

Thanks for the opinions, sounds like this is one to try! Now to find something else in that catalog to plump up the order to make the shipping cost worthwhile!
