Does anyone know of a purple melon?

I saw in one of my catalogs a melon that was purple, i thought the flesh was purple and DH thought it was the skin. It was an early variety and not sugar baby. I can not find it in my catalogs here but the catalog was full color catalog or at least had color pictured on every page.

I was looking thru the SSE Public catalog and noticed one in there that looked like it had purple flesh (Chris Cross Pg.64) but than again it might be the lighting or camera filter that they use ? Hope this helps.

I really have to wonder what cameras and what settings were used to take some of the photos in the SSE catalog. Some of the colors are way off.

This is really strange. In SSE catalog it does look almost purple. But I dont think thats it. This variety was even more purple that I was looking at.

I agree with Feldon, (did I just say that out loud?) The colors on the SSE catalog seem off, Czech's Bush almost looks like the slices of tomato have welded together, as does Amish Paste

Well I do as well Feldon, so celebrate in any way you want to.

The colors being off on some pix started two years ago and I didn't get back to them as I assumed lots of others would do so. Maybe there were problems getting a second picture of certain varieties. I just don't know.

And I don't think it's a camera thingie, rather, a color reproduction thingie.

And I have never seen a melon with purple flesh or with true purple skin.

Richard, on the page you refer folks to in the 2007 SSE Public catalog there are only flowers, and there's no melon variety called Criss Cross in the melon section.

Chris Cross is in the watermelon section. In my catalog it's on page 64. Although I wouldn't expect this melon to turn out purple "in real life," the flesh of the melon in this photo really does look purple.

This post is interesting to say the least, with people agreeing with Feldon just a beginning .

I really wish I knew what catalog and where I saw this purple melon. I am starting to wonder if I am slowly losing my mind. Maybe it was just a dark pinkish red or possibly a bad color in another catalog. Both thoughts are entirely possible. As I couldnt find the cordless phone again, and this time it was in the freezer (thats the 2nd time I have done that) Phone rings while I am putting groceries away. Whats next?

wow, worth can you imagine that shape, and the price tag? Then again, it said they are paying the equiv. of $15-$25 a piece for a watermelon...

It shouldn't be difficult to grow square (actually cubic) water mellons, as I have done it with tomatoes. Just make a square box.

Square tomato is usefull because it's the shape of sandwiches.

But cubic fruit comes with a caveat: Square watermelon costs 10,000 yen, the equivalent of about $82 Each . Regular watermelons in Japan cost from $15 to $25 each.

I meant REGULAR watermelon...I missed the $82 for a square one...wowza... I couldn't buy 5 square watermelons for 1 months house payment hehehe
