Default Virus in Seed or Soil?

This is a question for the people who may have written about this prior........ It used to be thought that the viruses that infected tomatoes was carried over in the seed. Then if I recall correctly someone made the discovery that the seed wasn't infected just because the plant was infected.

I tried to search this but my key words weren't good for this.

Carolyn Male, there was a discussion about using a washing solution on seeds to help remove the virus, does any of this ring a bell?

Thanks
