Crnkovic Yugoslavian x Jaune Flammee

In 2017 I grew Jaune Flammee for the first time and my son and I LOVED its flavor. I thought boy I wouldn't mind a larger say 6-8oz version of it. I was also growing Crnkovic Yugoslavian in 2017 and was wowed by its production, vigor, and flavor. So I did some lazy crossing, placing the anther cones from Jaune Flammee on some emasculated CY flowers (see my brief thread about my lazy cross--which I believe took and wasn't self pollination http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=45426)

I saved seed from both crossed tomatoes separately and will grow 1 plant from each crossed fruit in 2018. Assuming the crosses both took I suspect both F1 plants should be nearly identical. Room is my major limiting factor, but at this point I'll probably grow something like 6 F2s in 2019 and see what turns up. I'll follow something if I'm very happy with an F2, otherwise might screen another batch of F2s in 2020. My goals are simple and I'm more excited about the adventure than the exact end outcome.

I'll update this thread through the process! I'm excited and doing some test germination on my seeds now.

I know Jaune Flammee is a Beta orange, KY is pink afaik. Beta is not expressed in yellow fruit but it will show through in a red fruit even in heterozygous state, so a Beta/- F1 would be orange-red. Assuming it will show in pink as well, could make for an interesting color in the F1.

Seeds were sown Monday night, nothing to report yet. I'm excited to see the F1 this year!

Now this a cross I will follow,for the following reason

I was the original source of Crnkovic Yugoslavian,you can check Tania's website to confirm that.

And Jaune Flammee I also know very well since back in 1992 4 of us were contacted by Norbert in France, he wanted to trade with us. We got together to be sure we each asked for different varieties, and it was Bill Minkey who got the Jaune Flammee one,I got one of the other Jaune ones,I think it was Jaune Negib, but I'd have to confirm that.

We shared the seeds we got and we were all SSE members, so SSE listed them and I was the only one who was doing seed offers so almost all of them were listed that way In the Annual Yearbook.

Why upsize a variety that was a great variety,stll is, at it's normal size.

The only other variety I know of where that was done deliberately is this one.

I just checked my 2017 SSE Yearbook, not my 2018 one which is a farce IMO, and Yes, Bill Minkey is still listing Jaune Flammee, as are several others. So Good for Bill and the others as well .

Potted up at first true leaf. Wide baby plants. Germination was excellent. These are from separately crossed fruits in case one wasn’t emasculated early enough and is a self.

Best wishes with your F1 grow out, it’s exciting and although seeds are mainly the goal, I bet your F1 will be delicious as well.

A couple of years ago we crossed Green Giant with Juanne Flammee. The F1 produced a nice 3-5 oz orange tomato with perfect shape, but the f2's had the whole tomato color spectrum, I never seen such segregation. Sherry has it at F4 on a yellow choice, I have a few versions of F3's laying around from big orange beefsteaks to small red tomatoes.
I think you will enjoy tinkering with that cross

While that is a goal, like I said I'm more excited in the journey than the exact outcome. Will I get a larger Jaune Flammee exactly, highly unlikely. But I think the potential for some tasty unique tomatoes exists.

Sounds like a fun cross--I'm hoping to get some similar to JF, but larger, and also excited for surprises and given the two parents I'm thinking tasty surprises.

Both plants are healthy and were rather large for 6 week old plants. Nice and warm this week!
