Default Captain Lucky Setting Fruit

So happy, I read that Captain Lucky sets fruit late, looks like the toothbrush pollinator strikes again.

Beautiful looking plant, and you are going to LOVE them. They are absolutely delicious ,and when you cut them open the 3 colors are beautiful. Lucky you!

I love your description, Marsha, so far the plant is really vigorous. Hope that means lots of tomatoes this year!

Nice fruit Dak. Would you please reference the thread for the toothbrush pollinator, or describe how you do it?

Thanks much.

What I did was get a cheap battery powered toothbrush and take it to the stem of the tomato flower and let it vibrate there for about 2 to 3 seconds. (do this between 10am and 4pm) The vibration pollinates the fruit for you, (you can sometimes see the pollen vibrating out) and does such a good job that you are less likely to have any cat-facing on your fruit.

I hope you have as much or greater success as I have!

They are very beautiful fruit for sure. I wasn't impressed with the flavor last year growing CL in a 5 gallon bucket. It was just sweet with no depth of flavor for me.But I have read so many good reviews on it I had to give it a second go this year but this time in the raised bed! Everything just tastes better grown in real soil imo. CL was a late setter for me this year but it was planted out with the last bunch. Last year I remember it being middle of the road as far as fruit set and ripening.

Thanks for the toothbrush pollinator info. I hope this method will help set fruit in the heat we are beginning to experience here in Albuquerque.

Ahhh, I am happy to hear the late set info. I was a bit worried as CL had set so few fruit. Around here, if they haven't set by July, you had better hope to keep the plant alive to set fall fruit.

I had high hopes.....

Very nice! Had my first about a week ago. A 1.5 pounder. Taste was much better than last year but not a show stopper for me. But the final verdict is not yet in. I want to see if the later fruit get better. If there is one thing I've learned in my tomato obsession years it is this: NEVER judge a variety by the first three fruit of the year!

Damon, I've learned that my cultivation practices have been more of a problem than my variety choices. In my earlier years of growing tomatoes I thought more water was a good thing, then assumed certain varieties were more prone to splitting. Don't have any fruit that's splitting now, as I'm much less liberal with watering, especially as fruit is ripening.

I liked the taste of Captain Lucky, a little sweet, with hints of a traditional tomato-y taste, excellent texture. It was perfect with a little chopped basil and fig balsamic vinegar.

Thanks, Mojave!

Very nice photo of the Captain Lucky tomato. Captain Lucky was the first to set fruit in my garden also. I hope mine look as nice as yours.
