I was going through all my tomato seed packages and writing down what I had so that I could plan my seed order when I realized that I had been stockpiling seeds again. I had forty kinds of tomato seeds.

I had promised myself when I got rid of all that seed a couple of years ago that I would stop buying everything that caught my eye. I will use the seed when I give away plants this year but this means I can't buy more than a few packs of seed. I can't do without Kellogg's Breakfast. German Red Strawberry, and I really want to try Granny Cantrell.

I won't look at another catalog, I won't, I won't, I won't!

Pack up all those old seeds and send them to Trudi at WinterSown so she can divvy them up for her free seed offers she is currently mailing out.

Make room for more fresh seeds so you can enjoy the catalog season!

I agree with dcarch, buying seeds that catch your eye is a lot cheaper than having a shoe fetish or any of the more popular addictions. My DH is smart enough to keep any comment he might have to himself as to my real need for new seeds when he sees the various $10 invoices for more seeds. I once told him I could buy seeds or jewels, which did he prefer? I have more seeds than I could probably ever use but somewhere in my brain I think I will at least try them all. Welcome to the madness.

Why not take those 40 varieties and narrow them down to the actual number of varieties you will actually grow?

Take all remaining seeds and offer those you pretty much know you won't ever grow for a SASE and the rest offer as trade for seeds you do not have that you would like.

As an example if you have seeds that you are more or less confident will produce Neve's Azorean Red I would trade you anything I have for those as I covet Neve's seeds that aren't crossed with something else. They could be maters or something else entirely. Just gimme the gosh darnoodley Neve's already!

I'm hanging onto at least a few seeds of each of my tomato varieties in the longshot hope that when someone eventually buys the house next door, they pull up the tree and let me build a tomato farm in their backyard.

I will be using most of the seed for my spring plant giveaway. It just limits the fun of trying new things. I am going to send any extra seed to a nice person who offered to feed my tomato addiction with some new varieties.

Also, anyone in the Chicago metro area, I give away plants every spring and would love to give some Tomatovillians some plants. Contact me if you would like me to put you on my list for 2007 This year I'm giving away Italian gardens: 2tomatoes, 1 eggplant, 1 pepper, and 1 basil. I will also be giving away about 40-50 types of tomatoes. Last year I gave away about 1200 tomatoes and 300 eggplants and peppers, this year I'm going to try to do more so I should have plenty. I do not accept any money. All free.

I would love to keep expanding to all those varieties, but what is holding me back is that I live in a small condo and garden at a community garden and that does limit me. Also, I can either expand the giveaway or expand the varieties. I would rather just give away more plantsl
