I may need to make myself one of those, or at least make one for my mom! My mom's family is very into their Polish heritage. She grew up in a town in Wisconsin with the Polish church and the German church. We still have polka bands (though usually up from Chicago) at weddings and such back home. The family reunions are all about stuffed cabbage rolls, sauerkraut, kielbasa, etc., with the kids' posters of Polish phrases, maps, etc. My poor husband is part Russian, so he's a little out of place, though fortunately no one has ever given him a hard time about their aggression and violence...

Oh! Speaking of anise liquors as we were. A few
years back, a Lebanese friend of mine introduced
me to Arok(sp?). The original and ancient Arab-
anise flavored liquor. Straight from the old country
and housed in a Galliano bottle. Homemade from
a relative. He claimed Syrian anise was used as they
grow the best in the region. Darn that stuff was
smooth!

We spent a very pleasant May afternoon chowing
on grilled Shish-kabob, listening to baseball and
getting schnockered on 107 proof licorice flavored
firewater....JJ61

P.S. By the end of the afternoon, we were throwing
old pairs of sneekers up onto the telephone wires.

Funny you should meantion
that Euro style home-made booze John ~

Back in Dec. , a friend of ours Uncles
came to visit from Crete for Christmas -
During dinner, they broke out of their luggage
a couple Coca-Cola bottles filled with a "clear alcohol"
in it and started pouring shots !

I came to find out through broken translation, it was Cretan moonshine called: Raki.

Let me tell you - all language barriers
were non-existant by the nights end -
And by the time I left, they called me
"their commander" and gave me a bottle of it to take home !!! (along with some home made goat cheese) -

Now I only break it out when my girl cousins
bring over "new boyfriends" to meet ... one shot and they know what they're getting into !

Another fun intercultural alcohol story -- my family had a couple of exchange students stay with us while I was in high school (I was an exchange student to India for a year, so we wanted to return the favor.) We've stayed in close touch with one of the girls from Brazil, either go down there or she comes to the States to visit every few years. One of the times I went to visit, I came home with several plastic 2-liter bottles of cachaca, Brazilian sugar-cane hooch. My friend's grandma had rented some land to a guy, who ended up not having cash to pay his rent. He offered to give her sugarcane in trade. She was a bit non-plussed, since she didn't have a ready use for a bunch of cane, but he volunteered to have it made into cachaca along with his. They ended up with hundreds of liters of the stuff that they were passing out to everyone. It made a mean caipirinha, though!!

Tom - I think it's one thing to be Greek/Italian amidst a bunch of Poles. German or Russian, on the other hand, is another story, since we were pretty much always getting invaded by one or the other. Fortunately DH is very nice and non-threatening.
