black from tula x sungold

Im making a black from tula/sungold hybrid. Anyone done this cross before?

Does it matter which one is the mother? i made both combinations just in-case.

It doesn't as far as I know,there are some rare cases where plants turn different when pollen/stigma donors are switched.In my opinion it's a good idea to do both ways but because you're using a hybrid as one of the parents there's no way to tell if differences among plants are due to this or not.Ussualy people use the plant which can give more seeds/fruit as a mother plant.

It will likely be much easier to emasculate Black From Tula and use that as the female. Plus Sungold is an enthuastic pollen donor.

Yes it is because the Black from tula has quite larger flower its easier to deal whit. But how long can i save the pollen?

All the crosspolinations died for some reason one made it but was very tiny fruit and then fell of as well?

Could be due to disease,but maybe you did something wrong? If you pollinate too early the stigma is not receptive and pollen can become inviable to the time it is receptive.If the temperatures are too high or too low tomatoes offten drop their flowers,but they do that in response to many other stresses.
Also one tip-always do as many flowers as you can,and always dip the stigma nicely into the pollen so it's completely covered with it.

Even if technique is good, and it's tricky, timing is everything emasculating blooms and also temperature is a big factor fruit don't set well in heat and other stresses of any kind can cause a plant to drop blossoms and small fruit too. Keep trying and also dip in pollen twice, about 12 hours apart. I do not try to store pollen I only use it directly after collecting it

seems like some seeds i gave away actually was the hybrid i was trying to make lucky! going to revive some of them. my guess is that all those large tomatoes are black from tula x sungold hybrids except the dark one.

The F1 cross of BFT X Sungold would be quite a small fruit, I expect. Possibly beef shaped, but not very large.

Making crosses does have a high failure rate but if you do lots of them you will get some to take. Don't give up.

Also although Sungold flowers are small, it's worth trying it out as a parent, you could try the crosses both ways. Some cherries make surprisingly good mothers, and are not too fragile to work with. Some plants IME are more sensitive about the emasculated flower, maybe they are more easily injured than others or have a reaction not to grow the fruit that they feel may be 'defective' or damaged. They will only wait until their best fruit have been grown up, and maybe then give it a try.

Do you have a certain size/color in mind that your trying to obtain from the cross? Like are you hoping for bi color beefsteaks or bi color cherries?

I actually manged to get the size and color i wanted on the first try. i want the same shape and size as black from tula. was hoping to get bi color, but this was my first cross.

i have now received one hybrid from the person i gave away seeds too. It does have all the traits i wanted it is even bi color orange and yellow.
