My eggplant for 2012 - updated - video posted for 2013

Growing a mix of old favorites, new developments and mysteries, as usual.

Skinny Twilight, Midnight Lightning and Twilight Lightning (all new named varieties stabilized by me out of Orient Express F1), Lao White, Neon, green stemmed, saved from the hybrid - F4, Louisiana Long Green (green stemmed), Thai Ribbed, Green Giant, Listada di Gania, Bianca di Imola, Ripples (which I stabilized out of Zebra), Prosperosa, Snow Globe (which I developed out of Cloud 9), New York Improved, Indonedian Pink Blush, Ping Tung Long, another 4 that have off stem colors and indicate crosses, and another 16 in small pots that emerge from an unknown cross between a black fruited variety and Casper - from 5 different selections last year - including a very unusual pale lavender over green background.

I consider you an expert with tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, so I thought I'd ask you a question about my eggplants. What are my eggplants showing when the leaves are drooping down? Some days they will be perked upwards and some days they have a tendency to sag downwards, like they're lacking something. Do they do this when they're lacking water or is it something else? In the picture that I've included, the leaves look normal, but many times they will hang straight down. Do eggplants require more water than say, tomatoes? If it's a water issue, I'll try to be more vigilant with my watering routine with them. Thanks for any information that you can give me. Do you have a video posted that covers growing eggplant?

Wow - that plant looks great! I do find eggplant foliage tends to vary throughout the day - drooping a bit in the intense, hot mid day, recovering at night. If they need water, they do clearly wilt, but come back quickly once watered. I now grow all of mine in containers - when the plants get large, I give them a good drink at least every two days. If yours are in the ground rather than containers, they likely need less frequent watering, depending upon how clay/heavy/water retentive your soil is.

One that I call Skinny Twilight - I am working on three different selections out of Orient Express F1 (from johnny's) - they are all very productive and very early, with different colors and diameters. Fun stuff! It is the black grow bags that push the eggplant and peppers to mature so quickly....if they were in the ground, they would need an additional month.
