Food Mill
I am thinking of buying a food mill to assist with making sauce, paste, etc.
On matters of tools I have never used before I usually defer to Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen, as I am a website subscriber. But their top recommended model, CuisPro, is over $100, and the only other recommended one is a plastic one by R.S.V.P. for $20. They only tested four. I searched Amazon, and saw one made by Oxo (who generally make nice stuff) http://amzn.to/120f8kj. And another one by Winco, which has some nice Amazon reviews. http://amzn.to/YnhyGR Oddly, though many people seem to like their legacy Foley food mills, Cooks didn't have high marks for their current model, a single-disk one that they report "bounces around" and was "difficult to clean." Any recommendations? Thanks, Ann |

Here is what I use. I am also of the opinion raw verses cooked. I go for the cooked.
http://www.durgan.org/URL/?RJSIZ 17 September 2012 . Tomato Juice.Sixty pounds processed Sixty pound of tomatoes was processed into 22 litre jars of pure tomato juice in two batches. Each litre of juice contains about three pound of tomatoes. The jars were pressure canned at 15 PSI for 15 minutes for long term storage at room temperature.Annotated pictures depict the process. http://durgan.org/2011/ Garden Journal |

Arm BC when on a visit, but since then have found there are many on the internet. The manual food mills are simply a convenient strainer. http://www.creativecookware.com/Food...FYI-MgodL3YA5Q They need not be complicated. I got my Champion Juicer from a friend, who lives on supermarket processed food. It is a marvel for many applications. I mostly use it for extracting the nutrients after putting through the food mill. http://www.rawnutrition.ca/en/equipm...FSdgMgod9R0AHQ Last edited by Durgan; March 31, 2013 at 04:40 AM. |

I also bought the attachment set of screens so I can make everything from seedless jams to coarser salsa. The shorter spiral makes it possible to make grape jam without a huge mess. I run the tomatoes through a few times and have only dry skins and seeds left. |

I have a "Back to Basics" food mll and it came with the Apple/Tomato screen. I've used it now for 5 years and am absolutely delighted with it. I paid $57 for it and got it from Ace Hardware. There are several other optional screens including a Berry Screen. The tomato screen lets the juice and the pulp come thru, and keeps the skins and seeds out.
For the time we use one each year, this manual machine is perfect. It's easy to clean and easy to set up and operate.

I would be lost without my Victorio strainer/mill. I got it for next-to-nothing on E-Bay, and it is worth every cent!

I have the one from OXO, works for me. I use the same screen for tomatoes and blackberries.

I received the Winware one for Christmas this past year and look forward to using it! I expect it will make the job of processing my tomatoes much easier and faster.

Wow, lots of options you're happy with, thanks!
My boyfriend was just telling me yesterday he wants an Omega 8005 juicer, and showed them to me on his iPad. Now, he's always got a wish list of gadgets and cool stuff, but he's been so steadfast on improving his diet over the past five months or so that I think it's a good indulgence. Note: it also extrudes fresh pasta, so there is a 'dark side.' I am sure I could borrow if it I wanted to make tomato juice, but think I will want a hand food mill. I'll look over all these recommendations carefully. Thanks! |
