There is a huge oak tree on the other side of the fence to our west that is bigger than the one Kurt posted about. It died two years ago and when it falls - it will destroy a large section of fencing. Worth, I can get you a phone number if you would like to cut it down. Bring several chainsaws and expect to be busy for a while

We use to cut monstrous trees down for fire wood in the Ozarks.
Sort of makes me feel sad now.

We got two younger ones.Classic hanging tree,lots of food,acorns,Moss,lichens.Be careful they walk around at night!))

Up until about 20 years ago when they were killed by oak leaf miners there were 2 huge oaks across the street from where I grew up in Mass. The trunks were large enough that 2 or 3 one piece hand hewn doors could have been made from each one. The last time I saw them they were dead with lots of bracket fungus. what a waste. Wish there was a picture.

These old oaks need the be harvested if they are going to die and rot.
Several in my neighborhood have crooked left to rot from oak wilt.

We had oak wilt and may still have it? It seemed to affect black oak trees more than the others. The largest oldest trees on our property are black oaks. I looked it up several years ago. It's a vascular disease - sort of like what Fusarium Wilt does to tomato plants. I just looked it up again, and this site explains a lot.
