Wild Boar Farms : Lucid Gem & Berkeley Tie-Dye Pics
The left is Lucid Gem, the right is Berkeley Tie-Dye (green).
Much to my surprise Lucid Gem seems to be earlier than the other antho I've grown, Indigo Rose. Also a bit surprised by the earliness of BTD. Ill post inside pics once they're sliced. Hopefully they taste as good as they look. Uh oh, screwed up the pic somehow. Let me try again. |

The Lucid Gem is the sweetest tomato I've ever eaten. Its has a light fruity note typical of many orange tomatoes I've tried, and it's not acidic at all. I never thought I'd run into a tomato that was too sweet for my palate. If there is such a thing, this might be it. It reminded me a bit of a cantaloupe.
I can't help but notice the similarity to the Striped German's that I've grown. In contrast I prefer the Striped German's citrus flavor, fruitiness, and acid level over the Lucid Gem's overpowering sweetness. It's more complex and balanced in my opinion. If I'm not mistaken one of the parents is a Big Rainbow, which I have yet to grow. I'd be interested to see if it's also ultra sweet. I'd like to hear what others that have tried Lucid Gem think about it. -Ethan |

This was my largest Lucid Gem.
They have great staying power. I thought the later ones tasted a lot better. The ones I left on the vine turned into such an amazing color, deep burnt orange. I'm fermenting seeds now. |

I'm growing the following WBF varieties: Not every thing has ripened yet, so I haven't tried them all. BTD : compact plant, mid to late, visually interesting PBTD : compact plant, single and double flower trusses, huge fruit, early, visually stunning, tastes like an acidic Captain Lucky, but still fruity and sweet. Haley's Purple Comet : huge plant, mid to late, not so productive Pork Chop: mid size, mid to late, slow to set Kaleidoscopic Jewel: large plant, mid season, visually stunning, productive Blue Berries: mid size plant, mid to late, visually interesting Big Sungold Select: huge plant, early to mid, 8 fruit per truss, not a big producer, meatier than a sungold, but doesn't taste quite as good or as sweet. Not much larger either and all of them split with normal watering and for some reason my Sungolds don't. Blue Gold: mid sized plant, mid season, productive, mine aren't showing any antho shoulders, which I don't believe is true to type. Might not be entirely stable I suppose. Lover's Lunch: large plant, 8 to 10 per truss, mid season, visually stunning, productive. Lucid Gem: large plant, 6 to 8 per truss, early to mid, visually stunning, productive, sweetest tomato I've ever tasted with no acidity (not saying much as I've only tried a dozen or two varieties). Cosmic Eclipse: mid size plant, mid to late, visually stunning, seems to be similar looking to KJ but not quite as productive. Candy Sweet Icicle: anemic looking, small, wispy, mid season, visually interesting, 6 or so to a truss Boar's Tooth: large plant, mid to late, visually interesting, productive, 6 or so to a truss, fruit is similar to CSI, but a bit larger, and later. Black Beauty: mid size plant, late, visually interesting, 4 or so to a truss, fairly productive. |

PMCGRADY - What is PP?
MissionGardens - Update the post after you've tried them. This spring I am growing 5 WBF varieties: 1. Lucid Gem 2. PBTD - First ripe tomato is now on the vine (PBTD is one of my favorite tomatoes) 3. Large Barred Boar (LBB) - Somewhat similar to PBTD but earlier and shorter plant- have been eating them for weeks 4. Black and Brown Boar - Similar to LBB but smaller tomatoes; very productive, early 5. Dragons Eye - This was a bonus pack from a seed purchase. Very productive, tomatoes start green and dark blue; but as they get larger, the color gets very dark and less and less green. Size looks to be about 3 oz. None are ripe but I can't imagine this tomato turning into the red color posted on the WBF site. I have no idea what it is. Anyone have experience growing Dragon's Eye? |
