Elk Hunt in Texas

Hard to believe but there are Elk herds in Texas. Younger son bagged this one last night (cooler to hunt at dusk):




Hunt camp was a few miles from ★★★★★★★★, Tx.


I always heard the expression "Things are bigger in Texas" - - now I am a believer:

I am not a hunter, but I have heard stories that there were Elk in Texas. I took it as meaning the same thing as "There were dinosaurs in Texas long ago". Interesting.

Is the herd part of a natural population, or is it the result of importing elk into Texas?

From what I have read all the elk in Texas were many years ago a different species and in the Guadalupe mountains.
These have to be imported on a private ranch and not subject to Texas game and fish laws.
These ranches have all manner of exotic animals on them.

The Butcher just informed my son that he was able to render 450 pounds "on the hook". Looks like his family will be eating Elk steaks, etc. for the next 12 months.

I saw a pickup driving south on I-35 from Oklahoma to Texas yesterday with a huge rack in the back. The tines extending out over both sides of the bed. He was probably returning from Colorado or Wyoming.

You still have to have a hunting license to hunt though.
But it is by far the least amount of cost.
These hunts cost many thousands of dollars.
In Uvalde an SCI (Safari Club International) score of 500+ is $35,000.
You shoot it you pay for it.

No doubt about your figures for the facility you mention, but my son paid a total of $2,550 including License for his hunt. For that, he has a huge amount of meat for his family. Out here the "back-strap" sells for $18 for a 4 ounce portion at a local shop. The Butcher was able to render 50 pounds of back-strap. In addition to all the prime meat, he is having sausage and hot links made with NuMex peppers. His estimate is that the 450 pounds "on the hook" is worth over $6,000, if one were to put a dollar value on it.

Bow season or gun or? Whatever you want for an exotic? Definitely a lung shot from the look of the nose. Any daytime photos? Looks like a big sky.

Our bow season opened a week ago. I cleaned two deer this week...it is so hot though. I can't imagine doing an elk that size in Texas heat without a butcher. 400 years back, before horses were here, it took the whole tribe getting in on a kill that size before it spoiled. I would imagine the hunters' ate the (bison) hump first, before the kids running to gather the tribe even returned with anyone.

Yeah is is an expensive place even for white tail.
They do include all sorts of things with the price.
drinks food lodging free fishing and the likes.
They even have a lit runway for planes to come in.
Your son got a good deal on some excellent meat.
If I would have known what I know now I would have kept about 20 pounds of elk meat instead of feeding it to the dogs.
It came from the skin of the elk my friend was taking care of for a rug.
He is a taxidermist and gave the meat to me.
There was nothing wrong with it and not spoiled and no hair.
I am lucky enough to not have to pay for deer hunting in Texas but I just dont mess with it.
One of the reasons I am invited is I dont trophy hunt and cull kill for meat.

No season on exotics and introduced animals.
There are free range ranches and high fenced ranches.
