What did you make your cages out of?

Great job! You're going to stake your cages, right?

Kamper420 -
I used concrete reinforcement wire
from Lowes ~
Was alittle tricky to work with when you get
towards the middle of the roll -
pliers, boltcutters, heavy duty gloves and beer
were a must !

Suze -
I thought the 8+ inches that
were in the ground was enough
to hold them up ??? No ???

It wouldn't be where I live. I usually use a two ft length of rebar and drive it about a foot into the ground, attaching it to the cage with cable ties.

What's your winds like there?

Tom,

I completely agree with Suze. You got to stake them dudes. Even if you don’t have heavy winds sometimes the weight of those huge plants your going to be growing will cause the cages to topple over.

I use whatever stakes I have. I’ve been known to use tree limbs that I gather in the woods. (Yes I’m cheap).

I like about a foot and a half in the ground and a foot or more above ground.

Looks great, love that little picket fence. Can't wait to see the tomato plants filling them out.

re:
I live @ the Bay ( 5 minute walk ) so no matter
whats going on with the weather, there
is always a lite breeze ~
In the end of April / begining of May, we
had severe wind (40+ mph) and rain.
Everything was fine ~
But that could be because there was no resistance
for the wind (aka big plants and maters).

huh ... a "misprint" in my blue-prints ???!!!

re:
Either can I ! But sounds like I need for fortify
before they mulitply ???!!!

Garden pics after a nice 1.5 inches of rain over the last 24 hrs -

The Driveway garden -

The main garden - staking completed yesterday just as the rains began -

Closer look -

Driveway has 25 tomato plants (the nine dwarfs are along the side and back edges of the driveway), 16 eggplant, and nearly 50 peppers. Main garden, 75 tomato plants, dozen or so hot peppers, 2 tomatillos, and lots of basil.

Whew! I bet you're tired after driving all of those tall stakes.

I've thought about staking ...
I'm gonna try a few next year just to
see the difference in maintenance ~

Here's a few pics of my garden taken about a week ago. In the first photo, the row in the foreground, has 4 Arkansas Tarveler and 4 Box Car Willie. The middle row has 4 Cuostralee and 4 German Red Strawberry. The third row, which can be seen better on the second pic, has an Earls Faux, Opalka, one that is unknown, Grape, Green Zebra, two Mortgage Lifter, and another GRSB.
