Default World most expensive tomato anyone?

So after reading this article http://www.haaretz.com/news/tomato-s...nyone-1.214099 and being the tomato maniac i am i exhausted my tomato finding abilities and located some seed, thanks to a member here. So i finally got ripe fruit and these guys taste pretty amazing perfect blend of sweet tart with a real clean finish. So here is the picture of the fruit.

They are not that expensive. 18 euro for 50 seeds. The cocktails from Enza are definitely more expensive (around a euro even in bulk)
I was really tempted to buy some myself tbh, but I just don't need 50 seeds (I would plant 1-2 per year), and 18 euro is not cheap obviously.
I was especially attracted by the somewhat low brix rating (6-7) for a new hybrid cherry, now that brix seems like the only important thing.

But is it noticeably better than say a black cherry or other top tasting cherry tomatoes?

I hope you noticed that that link was I think, short term memory problem here, from 2007, so I wonder what the cost might be now.

Israel is not without inflation problems and yes, I do know about Hazera, but I thought they sold only large commercial amounts of seeds to commercial farmers, etc., not to private home gardeners.

I look at this and wonder if the taste is worth the price. Then I remember that I can stand in my garden in the rising sunlight and marvel at the wonderful taste of a truly vine-ripened Tommy Toe. I can take a slice of a large beefsteak and slide it on to the bacon, lettuce, Miracle Whip, and sweet bread and then wonder if I could actually survive anything that tasted better.

So, my impression of this tomato is the same as that of the $1000 hamburger with the 24 karat gold leaf bits and a cash register ringing up sales. I personally think things like this are strictly for bragging rights and has nothing to do with taste, production, or nutrition. I REALLY DO understand the drive we humans have to be first, or part of the elite, or even "just gotta know" groupies. But, with respect for those who like this kind of thing, this is not for me.

However, I do think it's a great business plan. Always price something at just a little more than the market can stand. Make it unique and somebody will buy it. Hope any of you who got it didn't spend too much.

JMHO.

What you have to understand is that they are not sold here in the US. Inpaid 8.10 euro for 5 seeds but the place i was able to get them charged a 30 euro minimum. I got 10 Summer Sun F1 and 10 Rhianna F1 for that 30 euro. Then i had to have a friend mail them to me from France.

I'm always intrigued by the comments like this article propagates:
"Summer sum is a hybrid, which also means that the fruit itself is sterile."

Really? Sterile? I have no trouble growing F2 of any hybrid. They just aren't going to be true to the hybrid. Am I missing something?

I have only tasted 1 and it was amazing. As good or better than black cherry for sure but in a different way. Slightly thicker skin so i think they would hold up to heavy rains. Tonight i will taste more of them. I also have one called Rhianna F1 that i am waiting to ripen up. It is said to have the Japanese flavor umami. I have a couple begining to blush but are a few days out. I bought these seeds for breeding purposes more than anything. I dont think i will buy the seed again but rather try to select a good F2 and so on.

I noticed that too Mr Bond! Obviously written for dummies who don't know nuffin! If they have to write that sort of thing, it make me wonder if their "hybrid" is even a hybrid at all!!!!!

Makes sense. I've been known to "try" a new bourbon. Sometimes you just gotta. It's like Las Vegas. The money you take out of your pocket might just be the price of your entertainment that night. I'm anxious to hear some results on the crosses. The slightly thicker skin may just be the solution to cracking during heavy rain events.

Black cherrys are quite thick skinned, and that's not stopping them. I find that thick walled ones are more resistant, but even then it's not guaranteed.
heirloomtomaguy, those pics look like Galina. How do they compare to them in taste, if you've grown them (one of my favourite cherries).

I am glad it worked out for you and you like Summer Sun. Does your son like it too? If I remember right you wanted it for him.

Yeah i had hoped that if any this tomato would be the one he liked. Nope just another spitter for him. Poor kid does not know what he is missing. All these amazing tomatoes we grow and not one of them suits his palate. He just does not like tomatoes. I have to hand it to him he keeps trying them in hopes of liking them he just doesnt.
